Firstly, thanks for a couple of mentions from people recently. I've been away scratching my head over life, forums and the universe at various points on the south coast between Cornwall, Hampshire and Essex.
Secondly, the enquiry about reserve team dates may need to be referred to a higher authority. David is clearly a Chelmsford City supporter and 1938/39 was the year the club turned pro and joined the Southern League. Furthermore, they reached the 4th round of the FA Cup beating Darlington and Southampton along the way.
All I can add - courtesy of the Southern League history - is something David will surely know, namely that our two league fixtures with Chelmsford in 1938/39 each ended in a 2-1 win for the respective home side. Torquay United reserves beating a team which reached the 4th round of the Cup? Can't be bad.
Perhaps there's a programme out there which contains a 1938/39 fixture list? And, speaking of programmes, yesterday's at Southend contained a couple of pages on that 1977/78 4-0 defeat featured by Timbo a day or so ago. It's still pretty painful all these years later, although it was a pleasure to be at Roots Hall yesterday with the same school friend as on that Friday evening thirty-three years ago. We'll do well to make it to Southend together in 2043.....

I am indeed a Chelmsford City supporter.
I have an interest in the Southern League season for 1938-1939 because it was Club's first season.
I have constructed a 'balanced' league table for that season, that is one where the games won equal the games lost and where the goals scored equal the goals conceded. Even the Southern league history published in 1994 did not get that right!
I am now trying to trace how the championship race evolved and I have the dates of games played by Bath City, Chelmsford City, Dartford, Folkestone, Gillingham, Guildford City, Ipswich Town Reserves, Worcester City and Yeovil and Petters United. I am now trying to track down the rest.
I am also interested if anyone has a scan of the Torquay v Chelmsford programme from that season

Sorry, I can't help on this one.
You can probably get most of our Southern League dates 1947 to 1951 from our "Programmes Room", but we haven't got a 1938/39 home programme yet. I'm sure we have one or two posters on the lookout, so we will let you know if we strike gold.
By the way, you wouldn't have a 1939/40 Southern League table as it stood when War broke out, would you?

Jon
I'm afraid I don't. None of the various Club histories that I have contain one and the Southern League history just says that football shut down on the outbreak of war.
I'll see what I can dig out though because it is something that I don't have that I should have.
There are a couple of things that I am also looking for. Attendances from the Torquay v Chelmsford games form 1939-1951. I have them from the games played at Chelmsford but not those played at Torquay.
Also if anyone is in the habit of visiting Torquay Library and looking at the old newspapers I would love to see copies of any match reports from the 5-5 draw played at Plainmoor on Saturday 24th September 1949.

I am indeed a Chelmsford City supporter. Can anybody entertain our Chelmsford visitor with a programme scan from our FA Cup game in 1970? Or is that too much of a challenge even for Timbo?

Guys I have tracked down a copy of the 1938-1939 Torquay United Reserves v Chelmsford City programme. As to be expected it was just a one page effort with the line ups printed on it. I will however scan it and post it on here later.
