I paid a quick visit to Dessau on the way to Berlin from Leipzig the earlier in the week and I came across this little gem of a stadium. It's home to SV Dessau 05 who play in the 6th tier of German football in the Verbandsliga Sachsen-Anhalt which is the highest division in the region of Sachsen-Anhalt. From there they could go up to the NOFV Oberliga sud where the region expands to include Sachsen, Sachsen Anhalf and Thuringen and from there its the Regionaliga Nord where they would compete with teams from regions across the north of Germany.
SV Dessau 05 like most East German clubs have had a number of name changes over the years. They started off life is FC Adler in 1905 and then merged with the local church youth club to become Dessauer FC. In 1919 they merged with Sportlichen Vereinigung BAMAG Dessau to form VfR Dessau 1905, and two years later a union with SpVgg Dessau created SV Dessau 05.
They were quite successful in the times of the Third Reich. They played in the top region division and won that championship several times in 1937, 1938, 1939, 1942, 1943 and 1944.
After the 2nd world war they changed names several times again.
As BSG Waggonbau Dessau they won the East German Cup in 1949 and played in the top East German League but then they went into gradual decline.
The Paul Griefzu Stadion was built in 1952 from the rubble of Dessau after it was bombed. It was named after a racing driver driving who was killed in a training run outside of Dessau on the Autobahn in the very same year. It holds 20,000 with 2,000 seated. Although it looks a bit basic and DDR-ish it seemed to be pretty well maintained. It's also used by the local athletics team.
Anyway some photos.
The club offices.
