Colin Bettany proved to be a major acquistion playing 350 league and cup games for the club from 1957 to 1965. Pretty much before my time in terms of memory but I guess it's a fair bet he would have played in the first games I ever saw. I've heard him described as the Beast of Plainmoor and as a "behemoth".
Ron Newman had played around thirty times for Northampton and Coventry but only manged four league appearances for Torquay. He then joined Bedford Town, then one of the strongest teams outside the Football League.
Eric Johnson made roughly fifty first-team appearances over two seasons before retiring with a knee injury. He'd previously played in ninety league games for Coventry City.
