Little did anyone reading that welcome to Geoff Cox that over thirty years later he would still be part of the furniture at Plainmoor as manager and coach of the young reserve team of the time, his son Maurice would be playing for the First team and his wife Madge would have been a valued assistant in the commercial office.

Little did anyone reading that welcome to Geoff Cox that over thirty years later he would still be part of the furniture at Plainmoor as manager and coach of the young reserve team of the time, his son Maurice would be playing for the First team and his wife Madge would have been a valued assistant in the commercial office. And, I imagine, Geoff would have quickly been moving into our relatively new cul-de-sac off Happaway Road with Maurice arriving on the scene in October 1959. I knew about Geoff's first-team career at Birmingham City - 35 league games - but hadn't realised he'd played in the very first Fairs Cup competition which took place between 1955 and 1958. Birmingham won their group - which featured Inter and a Zagreb XI - but lost to Barcelona in the semi-final. Indeed, it's possible Geoff was one of the first footballers to play for a English club side in a European competition. The Fairs Cup was, initially, a tournament for cities which held trade fairs although some places (eg London) put out composite sides drawn from several clubs. Birmingham City were regular entrants and both Gordon Astall and Robin Stubbs appeared in Europe for them. Robin's first team career at Birmingham doesn't quite overlap with Geoff's as he didn't sign pro until after Geoff had moved to Torquay.
