This is my latest aquisition, a fixture card for the 1936/37 season as issued by Player’s Cigarettes and which also includes those for Plymouth Argyle. This was a poor season in the end with United finishing third from bottom, but was a most odd season for results. Possibly United’s strangest ever… On three occasions we scored five goals, but we also conceded five goals in another three games, although in each of those three five-goal defeats we managed to score a goal. We scored four goals twice, but in one of those we conceded seven in return. In addition we conceded four goals a further four times. In one game we scored three but so did the opposition for a 3-3 draw. The majority of United’s goals came from Ben Morton who was a subject of an earlier thread of mine on the History pages. There are also some interesting facts for this season in regards of Argyle; they had their joint highest winning margin of seven goals in the 7-0 win against Doncaster on the 5th of September; then amazingly in the next game, on the 9th, they had their joint highest scoring draw, 4-4 against Bradford City.
