If only Peter Wakeham had played for England U23s back in 1957 for, surely, that would have been the biggest representative honour ever gained by a Torquay United player. See this extract from the News Chronicle and Daily Dispatch Football Annual to see the company Wakeham would have kept: Wakeham was to join Sunderland in September 1958 before later playing for Charlton and Lincoln. I wonder if his selection as U23 "reserve" was on merit or something of a gesture to the lower divisions? As for Noel Kinsey - a player we didn't sign in the end - he went to Port Vale and played around seventy league games. He was approaching thirty-two when we attempted to sign him and had made his name at Norwich.
