I can actually remember being at that game ~ sitting on the "Boys' Benches" on the touchline in front of the Grandstand. I can remember the bus ride from Milber Shelter down to the Tech, and the long walk up past the coach station and the massive crocodile of people wending their way up Forest Road to the ground. I particularly remember some City fans in red and white suits with their rattles in St Marychurch Road outside one of the pubs; and I have a vivid picture still in my head of the late Norman Clegg, the United cheerleader in his blue and gold topper and tails and the United team in their shiny blue satin shorts. So there were almost twelve thousand people there that day. No details of the match but the score stuck in my mind apart from the United wingers Ernie Pym and Larry Baxter who of course we had a close up view of, and the two "City Baldies" ~ Gordon Dale and Arnold Mitchell ; but that scoreline always did.............. 3-4 what a game! I would have been six and a half at the time, the very same age my youngest daughter Olivia is now!
