Best we have an Ashes thread started as there is not many days to go before the opening test on the 25th. You know I think we`re gunna win but it could get dodgey if you win at Brisbane. May the sledging begin!!!!! ;D

Looking at the weather forecast, I certainly think there may be a bit of sledging going on soon. ;D Looking forward to this series as I think it will be competitive, particularly with the retirement of many of the players that have tormented us poor wingeing poms over the last two decades. Aussie, I think you may be in for a tough time on this thread as the omens are looking good for England so far. Please don't take offense at any sledging as there will be limited sympathy for any wingeing aussie's.

The omens looking good for for England `eh, that`s exactly where we want you, over confident, you always come unstuck when you think your gunna win, especially against us! And don`t worry me taking offence, I wouldn`t have started this thread if I hadn`t been ready for it! Enjoy the series for as long as you can!

I'm working lates (hence going back over the old posts I have missed, this forum is such a quality read that I feel I need to read all of the posts), so I will be home just in time for the first ball and aim to watch at least the first session, depending on how well it goes. The last time I watched the first ball of an ashes from 'down under' it set the tone for the whole series, so lets hope that we don't see a repeat of that, or of Nasser Hussains decision to bat first.
We seem to have cut out the mandatory bad session that used to cost us so dear, along with the middle order collapse (cue both tonight), which makes us tough to beat. We also have such strength in depth.
I'd like to see us play 5 bowlers because you do need to take 20 wickets to win a test match and that will be hard on those pitches, with a ball that won't swing and baking hot temperatures.
I know a lot is being made of the toss tonight, but I genuinely beilieve that we have a strong enough team to win it regardless of who wins the toss, or who bats/bowls first. In one way I hope that they win the toss so that they don't have that to whinge about when we beat them.
Talking of whinging, Ricky Pontin(s) I wish I could hate him like most people seem to, I can't help but like the guy and now that his back is up against the wall I am going to back him to come out fighting and end up as the Aussies top batsmen, oh and also the first to lose the ashes, four times isn't it??
It's going to be a great series, its just a shame we won't get to watch that much live.
I'm going for a 2-1 victory and retain the ashes.

247/8 so far, you guys appear to be getting done by your own outside edges, keeping our slips from getting bored though, very considerate of you!

It was fairly even stevens today until that hat-trick. I stay up until lunch when it was an even 86 - 2. First blood to the aussies.

It`s early doors mate! The grounds man has said "due to the rain" in the run up to the game he couldn`t get it to the normal standard he gets it to, so the average or par for that course is 340, that`s when he has got it the way he want`s it! England might get something out of that wicket and take some crutial wickets, we`ll have to wait and see, be patient it`s a five day game!

Then I heard the delight of hearing Siddle's hat-trick and cue a gloating Michael Slater! I groaned. It's not the losing I can't stand, its the hope we might not lose that does me over. I'll stay up and listen on the DAB radio again tonight. Hopefully it'll be that we've skittled them out for around our total but I have a horrible feeling it'll be 371-2 at stumps. We'll see how it pans out but I was hoping for a much better day than that. It was so important to have a good solid day with the bat. No-one said it was gonna be easy despite what the Aussie press were saying.

481/10 your only 202 behind us at the start of your second innings, close of play England 19/0, I recon you`ll need to hit four and a half hundred to have anything at all to defend in order to win this one, just can`t see it, better hope for more rain! ;D ;D ;D

Looks like this England team isn't going to roll over and should make for a great series. It warms the heart to see we scored a load of runs and only lost one wicket today. But I won't relax until we get to lunch with over 400 plus in the bank with a load of wickets in hand. I have to say that I'm glad we have Trott coming in at 3. I know he's a little out of form but at least he'll dig in and score runs or support the batsman who's in and scoring. It was mentionned this morning on the radio that Ponting isn't a very good captain when he has to think how to get settled opposition batsman out. The theory that the increasingly mad Geoff Boycott was putting forward was that he's fine when he has top quality bowlers like Glenn McGrath and Shane Warner who work their own strategies out. Peter Siddle's a very handy bowler, Hilfenhuis seems a better bowler in non Australian conditions, Shane Watson is used only sparingly and Mitchell Johnson doesn't bowl enough good balls in the right areas. I wonder if they'll drop him for Doug Bollinger in the next test. I wonder if England will also bring Bresnan into the team. Stiffen the batting up and give us a extra bowling option.
