............ah, still brings a tear to my eye to see this even now after all the years that have gone by - a bit further along from where the camera stops out in the Lane used to be the old Programme Shop (along with Merses' office etc) - this is where dear old Maurice "Popeye" Wills used to hang out - he would shout at us kids - we were terrified of him - a great old Plainmoor character, may he RIP - I seem to recall a story about when he died, and when his belongings were gone through and sorted, a lifetimes' memorabilia from TUFC was found, there were progs, cuttings, piccys, albums etc, all lovingly catalogued, filed, indexed and written up by him - anyone else remember that story? - sure it was in the HE at the time - Dutchgull tells me a great story how Maurice set fire to his own beard once with his ever-present rollie hanging from his lips as he celebrated a goal - causing a great panic in the Enclosure as his flaming whiskers were eventually extinguished - after his passing, the club exceptionally allowed his ashes to be interred on the pitch where the tunnel is now I think, so legend has it - if true, what a fine gesture from them and an absolutely fitting tribute to a grand ol' supporter and a Plainmoor legend of old, he would be very pleased to see where we are at the moment, I think...............
.......I digress, so many other memories of seeing the auld ground again - especially seeing the railway sleepers up the away end there - and of course the mini-stand - cripes, theres' some stories about that thing...............
......anyone else with any memories? - come on Phil!.........

The same as Mr W fair brought tears to my eyes that clip! That IS Plainmoor. 21000 screaming their heads off at FA Cup games and 10000 plus doing the same at league games (and no bloody drum required!  ) Memories are made of this!! Plus everybody we played was actually signed on!. Looking at the ground in the video it is easy to see why clubs didn't like coming here. Now it's not the ground it's the way we play!! |

I've got 2 memories of Maurice. The first one is him repeatedly shouting out 'Get some good players!!!' at whoever our manager was at the time. The second memory concerns an incident that took place at the Imperial Hotel Christmas Party (Maurice worked there). Apparently, on seeing Maurice at the party, an ex-colleague of mine said to his wife 'I've got a suit like that' to which his wife (who also worked at the hotel) replied 'That is your suit'. |

yes great memorys of the ' old ' ground. for me im hoping to get down for at least one more home game before ( hopfully ) the old grandstand is bashed down. think of all the people that have used it over years. it served us very well.
it is time for a new one and i think then the ground will be fab , time must move on.
love the old mini stand. I can just about remember when it was terracing and then they put the benches in around 85 ish. but can anyone shed some more history on it from before then ?

The Ministand replaced the old rickety structure the Cowshed which had it not been taken down would soon have fallen down on it's own. It was built in the summer of 1967 after a successful first season back in Division 3 (now League 1) when if we had won our last two games we would have been promoted to Division 2 (now Championship) instead of Middlesbrough. The intention was to have the same style terracing along the whole width of the pitch behind the goal at the Ellacombe end. There was insufficient finance to do it all in one go so the original 1967 section really was a ministand, being centred behind the goal but not extending very far either side of it. The ambitions matched the performances on the pitch and in the first season of the ministand we led Division 3 from the very first game just missing out on promotion yet again finishing 4th. The Ministand was extended a year or two later but never did extend to the whole width of the pitch as originally intended, and was replaced by what we have today (late 80's / early 90's?) |

Hey Stefano, don't forget that a section of the Cowshed survived next to the Ministand for a few years before blowing down in a gale. I seem to recall a photo of it in the Herald Express after the collapse. The fact that the youth team of the time allegedly used it for target practice did not help with the structural stability of it during its last few years. Has anyone got any decent photos of the old Cowshed and/or Ministand? It's a shame but I don't think I've seen any shots specifically of those stands rather than partial shots of them in the background of action scenes. The only one I can recall of the Ministand (at least a part of it) was from the Herald in the late seventies after a troublesome night against Argyle - probably some people on this forum are on that photo. I remember it as TBGS were represented in it. |

That's one of the best pictures of the mini-stand I've seen. It also clearly shows the join between the original part and the extension on the right hand side. Without those extensions it was indeed 'mini' but with the extensions it was a reasonably sized terrace and much better designed than the current popular side or away end. |

........I'm not entirely convinced by the piccy appertaining to Willie Brown taking a penno against Grimsby in the above link (5th image from right) - if thats' not Bob Carolgees aka Houdi-Elbow, I'll be.......... www.fyefield.com/images/bob_carolgees.jpgwww.tiswasonline.com/gfx/tapes/more_of_the_best_bits/022.jpg.......for younger readers, ya man Carolgees was a sort of comedian from back in the late 70s/early 80s whose alter-ego was a seriously bonkers character called "Houdi-Elbow", this weirdo was a proper nut job clad in pyjamas (early incarnation of Statto?), and sporting a bizarre bandana - seeing himself as some sort of mystic and shamen, the loon frankly did nothing more than spend an inordinate amount of time trying to stick his finger up Chris Tarrants' nose or in his ear, along with indulging in crap dad-dancing during the musical and disco parts of Tiswas, the show he had a bit part in (for the benefit of those who can't quite remember it, this was a crazy, custard pie flinging antics-related kids' show of its' time on ITV) featuring the afore-mentioned Chris "Final Answer?" Tarrant along with Sally "at the time, deffo 11/10 Phowarrrrr Factor" James............ ..........seriously a couple of great sets of piccys there Jon, I think "stark" is the description what with them being in black and white - clicking on the menu section of the site reveals another load of TUFC piccys from various times as well, I notice - some good memorabilia on there too, come on admit it, who didn't have one of those inflatable gulls at some stage (pretty sure this beast goes back to the '89 Wembley appearance)........ PS: .......Tiswas - fantakkers, far better than Swap Shop!...... |

I know there are a few gentlemen that read this forum that will remember the old club office at the top of Homelands Lane. Before the family stand was built that is where you went to claim your match tickets, enquiries, etc. I can remember buying my tickets for away travel on the Wallace Arnold coaches they used to use back then.   The brass plaque that had been cleaned to within an inch of its life was rescued from the skip when the office was demolished in the early nineties. |
