The Ipplepen manager had taken the decision not to enter the team into the Devon Cup as he wants to concentrate on the league and go for back to back promotions. This meant there would have been no game to day but as Villa also had a gameless Saturday this fixture was brought forward which makes perfect sense and helps reduce any games backlog near the end of the season.
With this the only match in the league being played the game represented a chance for Ipplepen to open up a three point league at the top of the table and after beating Villa 3-1 at their ground last month the Ipplepen players were certainly in a very confident mood.
The pitch looked vastly improved from the game I watched there five weeks ago and there was no sign of the very strange circular clumps of longer grass or weeds if that what they were and it was also clear the grass had very recently been cut, so the pitch looked like it would play well and hopefully play its part in producing a good passing game of football.
The standard of football on display was very high with both teams always looking to pass the ball on the deck but for most of the game Ipplepen were very much in control of the match and their defence dealt so well with the Villa forwards that the pen keeper had hardly anything to do all afternoon. That’s not to say Villa were not in the game as they worked hard to make a game of it, but they just lacked any real punch in the final third of the pitch.
Ant had a half chance very early on and a Villa defender did so well to make up a few yards and get a block on Ants shot and the ball went out for a corner, nothing came of the corner but Ipplepen soon took the lead thanks to a rare headed goal by Ant.
Ipplepens right winger ( no 11) who has been out for some time due to injury beat his man out wide with ease and sent into the box a perfect cross and Ant was able to loop his header over the keeper and into the roof of the net.
Villa responded in a very positive way and started knocking the ball around very well and had one or two good moves that all ended up breaking down as they go near the Ipplepen box.
Ipplepen went two goals up following a corner that was not cleared and the ball was headed back toward the far post where Ipplepens number five volleyed the ball into the net and Pen sure were good value for their lead and maybe should have added to their first half lead.
Ant had one good chance after an Ipplepen player burst into the box brushing off the defender with ease and then leaving the keeper stranded on the floor near the penalty box, I thought he was just going to put the ball into the empty net but the ball ran away from him and he ended up catching up it with way past the post with and he did well to back heeled it to Ant, but by this time the keeper was back on his line and had some defensive cover and Ant only managed to hit a very tame shot by his standards.
Ipplepen started the second half where they left off and were well on top and should have had to more goals to add to the two they got in the first half. A cracking shot was fired at the Villas goal that beat the keeper and hit the cross bar and clearly bounced down over the line but it was not given.
Then Ipplepens number 9 jumped with the Villa keeper and clearly won the ball and scored but the ref was the only one who saw it as a foul on the keeper and disallowed the goal.
With just over 20 minutes to go the Ipplepen manager made two substitutions taking off the right winger and very surprisingly Ant and just five minutes later after Villa pulled a goal back I was thinking to myself that getting substitutions wrong can change games and end up reversing the result. Villa sure looked the most likely to get the next goal only they pushed far to high up the field with out having Ant to worry about.
That did not happen and only due to two very poor goal keeping errors by the Villa keeper, in one picture you will see Pens number nine slotting the ball pas the keeper for Ipplepens third goal and you won’t see any Villa players in the shot at all. I think the ball was being pumped forward by a Villa defender and hit another player and the ball went up in the air and back toward the Villa goal. I can only assume the ball had hit a Villa player as Pens number nine was way off side, either that or the linesman who can be seen very clearly way behind the play missed it all and was unsure what to give if anything. That said the keeper would have been the clear favourite to get to the ball first but just stayed on his line only moving off it slightly when Pens number nine got into the box with the ball at his feet.
Ipplepens number seven who I have spoke highly off in other Pen match reports got a forth for Ipplepen, I was not so impressed with him today as he was guilty of being far to selfish with the ball and mostly ended up losing it only for him to get angry with himself and then failing to try and win the ball back.
He did find himself just outside the box and he hit a low right foot shot that the keeper really should have saved only he dived far to late after having a clear sight of the ball and the result was the ball squirmed under his body and over the line.
That really was the last of any action of note and on a colder and duller Saturday afternoon than the last two where the sun had been out making it a much more pleasant afternoon, Ipplepen did what they had to do and were worthy winners and now need to keep up that level of performance if they are to stay top of the table.

It was never a foul ref
Pens third goal, keeper thinks player is off side
