No players were in any grave danger or were injured during the making of this production.
Its hard to see why Riviera Spurs 2nd are bottom of the table as they gave Marldon a very good game this afternoon and showed plenty of fighting sprit and could have had a second half lead, if it was not for a fine save with his legs from Marldons keeper Craig Hughes, who continues to impress me with so many fine saves he keeps producing.
Not going to say too much about the pitch other than it was in very good condition and perfectly playable. The only problem today was some heavy rain near the end of the match and the fast fading light. The game kicked off at 2.30pm, but I feel winter games in the South Devon league really should be starting at say 1pm. That way at least the end of the game would be played in reasonable daylight and would greatly reduce the risk of injury to any players.
Marldon started the much better team and were on top for a good part of the first half. So it was no real surprise they scored the very first goal of the match. From a corner Marldons number 2 Simon Williams rose above everyone and headed in a powerful header that had the Rivera keeper well beaten.
The lead was not to last too long due to the Marldons left back wanting to much time on the ball when all he needed to do was put his boot through it and get it cleared. He had the ball robbed off him by Rivera’s number 14 who looked up and saw his team mate number 15 breaking into the box. He then played a perfect low ball to him and number 15 hit it first time into the left hand corner of the goal, giving Craig Hughes no chance to make a save.
Not a great deal more of note happened for the rest of the first half and I felt Rivera had done enough and deserved to see the first half end with all honours even.
Rivera started the second half much better and were on top for a while; their number 15 found himself put through on a one on one with Marldons keeper and should really have scored. He hit the ball well enough but not wide enough of the keeper, in saying that young Mr Hughes did well to block the shot with his legs.
Marldon were making very hard work of getting the ball up to their strikers Ant Roach and Ramon Matram, but the one time they did find Ant Roach, his brilliant goal changed the whole second half.
He received the ball waist high just outside the box, and had two Rivera defenders for company. Ant Roach then cleverly flicked the ball over the two defenders heads, turned and hit the ball powerfully on the half volley with his right foot giving the keeper no chance at all, a goal Rooney would have been proud of.
Rivera then starting pushing higher up the pitch looking to get back into the game and the tactic played into the hands of Marldon. Time and time again good balls were played up to the Marldon forwards who were now able to find more space to work in.
Marldon added a third goal, a fine strike from outside the area by their number 3 Joe Williams. The ball came back out to him from inside the Rivera box and he hit it sweetly first time into the net.
Ant then had another good chance he made to score again, the ball was played up to him and he rolled his marker and was heading into the box and just as he got his shot away, a Rivera defender just managed to get a block on the shot.
Marldon then scored their forth goal of the match and it was good to see Ramon Matram back on the score sheet after a few baron weeks where he has failed to score. He fully deserved his goal but he had to have two attempts at it. He danced his away around two Rivera defenders in the Rivera box then hit a shot from around six yards out. The keeper was beaten but a Rivera defender on the line managed to get his boot on the ball to stop it going over the line. The ball came back to Ramon Matram who this time made sure as he placed his shot between the keeper and the defender on the line.
Rivera never gave up and scored their second goal near the end of the match. Not sure who scored it but the ball should have been dealt with by the Marldon defence and should not have got to the Rivera player. He did hit a fine shot across the keeper from just inside the area right into the corner of the net.
My first half pictures were fine, but due to the fast fading light I had to up the film speed to try and freeze the action with the result a few are a bit grainy, roll on a bright and sunny winters afternoon when picture taking is going to be so much easier.
