Firstly a very big thank you to Peter Godfrey for sending me these pictures, It means so much not only seeing them again, but to now have a copy for myself. Peter Is on the front row far left with a ball by his knee. I'm the mascot sat in the middle at the very front. I hope Pete will post on here how old he was in this photo, as I do not have a clue how old I was, but I will be able to work It out when Peter lets me know. This paper cutting shows the grandstand that once once a part of the Rec ground at Newton Abbot, the pitch was the other way around in those days.

Of the guys in that picture..................trainer Ken Holmes was the father of the late Clive and Nigel who has done such a marvellous job in lifting Buckland Athletic up the football pyramid in double quick time. Keeper Len Blackmore was an excellent player who also played for Exeter City and later drove buses for Devon General. Bill Bannister was a classy centre half who played many a game for Torquay United as an amateur and managed Chelston. Phil Congdon must have been about 14 in that photo and so that would date it at about 1963 and he is in fact the brother in law of United legend Les Lawrence! That would make Peter about sixteen in that photo, am I correct Pete? cos I remember you at Newton Abbot Grammar School and I reckon you are four years my senior! As for you Dave, have you grown much?

Merse the trainer and the keeper were two faces that jumped out at me from this photo, If you are correct with the year, then I would have been nine years old, talking about being short, I had an invite to be a friend on Friends reunited last week. A lady from down under who went to school with me.
She said she thought I was the one she knew, said were you the short one. Yes thats me, thanks love ;D ;D

As Merse is such a young whippersnapper I can't say I do remember him! For some strange reason I was Head Boy at NAGS - Merse might have been my f*g ! p.s. I seem to have accidentally deleted my last post - I'll get used to this if it kills me !

I doubt Pete remembers me, his younger brother Richard was a year older than me even and we all went to Decoy Primary too. I remember Pete playing for Newton Spurs but by the time I began there ( 68 or 69) I think he'd gone to university................I'm certain we never played in the same team and the youth team I played in didn't do as well in the FA Youth Cup but won the Devon County Youth Cup (I got dropped for the final having played in the two rounds before that!) and included some really good players who went on to play League football............... Bobby Gray (Aberdeen) Ian Twitchin and Steve Morrall (Torquay United of course) Terry Kingon (Derry City) as well as Pat Roche who went back to Ireland before returning to play in the Man Utd first team and the Republic!

I've just run through that thread.....................good wasn't it! Been watching R&D and Alty - Altrincham should have won that but for going to sleep on a restart. Nene Park has zilch atmosphere but the facilities of a 5 star hotel, did you see the tunnel back to the dressing rooms?

It was such a land mark In Newton and It was sad it see It go. I think the whole Of Newton turned out on that Sunday morning, when they blew It up. I thought when you left Oakland Rd you went to the new estate Of Sandringham Rd? your mums a great age, I remember her as a small woman and I seem to think your Dad played the piano?
