Apologies to former stars of Brixham Grasshoppers and St Marychurch Devils but this is the only other Pioneer League programme in my possession. It's the 1972 final between Torre Trojans and Bovey Tracey. It features two future Torquay United players, one on each side, in Bradley Beattie and Richard Goslin. Each had brief first-team careers as teenagers. Bradley Beattie's son is a member of the current youth team. Also pictured is Mark Hendrie who, I think, had a spell as an apprentice at Wolves.

Just found this - the very first Pioneer League cup final from 1970. Peter Lewis was the son of Dennis Lewis who still holds the record for the most Football League appearances for Torquay United.

Looking at the names on your last programme barton downs, many seen names I know. I do wonder in the Sharland who played for Kingsteignton, was the son of the very well know butcher in Newton Abbot at that time.
Merse will remember Sharland the butchers, who's shop was near the top of Queen Street, just across the road from the Commercial Hotel, that was knocked down to make way for the Pearl Insurance House.

Jeff's father was called Ron Sharland and I do believe he was a clay worker at WBB. Maybe the family is the same as the butcher's shop or maybe Ron was a butcher by trade who lost those premises which I do remember well, but not as well as Jeff and Jerry Sharland his two sons who were both very good footballers at local level.

Do you know where they lived Merse? the Sharland family that had the shop lived in a big house on the left, just before Forges Cross.

The 1970 programme lists the Sharlands - Jeremy and David - as cousins and both pupils of Kingsteignton County Secondary Modern School. Steven Pope - of Torre Trojans - is described as the son of ex-Torquay player Leslie Pope (but I can't find any record of Les Pope playing for the Torquay United first team). I think Steve may have had a spell with West Ham after leaving school. Meanwhile something from rather later. This regular programme feature comes from the 1979/80 season:

I wasn't aware of a "David" Sharland whilst Jeff was Jerry's elder brother. Les Pope WAS a pro'at Plainmoor who never made the first team in the early sixties and then went part time at Bideford and was in their very good side that reached the First Round of the FA Cup in 65-66 (?) bringing Colchester United back to North Devon for a replay. Graham Bond played in that side to as well as another former United winger, Colin Court. The Pope family lived in Marnham Road and Les (a sign writer) was the very talented man who created many of the pitch side advertising boards during my time at Plainmoor. Photographer Colin Bratcher used to make 'em, Les painted 'em whilst Neville Holman the handyman used to hang 'em up! I well remember Les creating the "Gulliver" shop sign and hanging it up for the first time to much piss taking from Little Dave Smith and Roy Davies (Gobs Inc)............... Davies:" 'ere Smudger, come and 'ave a butchers; they've put your pub sign up" His wife Betty used to clean the Social Club and his brother is Lew Pope no less! Steve DID have a few trials at West Ham United too. That guy on the programme page hasn't aged a bit in almost thirty years has he!
