I’m always fascinated by the way those programmes from the 1940s and 1950s discuss – in their very newsy fashion – players who the club had attempted to sign. In some cases this is almost a list of Those Who Could Have Been Heroes. In this instance, Kevin McCurley sounds a handy performer who remained with Colchester for the rest of the 1950s. Des Frost, the Halifax player, deemed not to be up-to-scratch didn’t have a bad league career either (although Division 3 North would have been another world to us back then).
An interesting note too, in one of Timbo’s recent programmes, about goalkeeper George Webber being tipped for a Welsh cap. If I’m not mistaken George died about a year ago and there was a minute’s silence at Plainmoor.
