Basil Easterbrook’s column tells us how he mitched off school in January 1931 on the day second division Bury came to Plainmoor for a FA Cup 3rd Round replay. It’s funny to realise that – with all of our oldtimers’ discussion of the BBC Match of the Day game in 1968 – it’s not the only time that the visit of humble, modest Bury has turned heads in Torquay (FA Cup winners in 1900 and 1903, mind you).
And what was Bury’s reward in 1931? A fourth round home tie against Exeter City.
They lost and City it made it to the quarter-finals.
The mind boggles.
