You may remember a discussion we had in June 2010 about Gordon Duck, a Torquay United player of the 1950s who was featured in Timbo’s February 1955 programme against Norwich:
This produced a response from Jon:
"Duck was retained at the end of the 1954/55 season, but seems to have disappeared before the start of the 1955/56 season - I don't know why. Duck spent one full season at TUFC - first appearing at Plainmoor at right half for the Reds in the first public practice match. He made two first team friendly appearances - scoring twice from inside left in a 5-2 win at Holsworthy and playing centre forward (between Collins and Mills) in an end-of-season friendly with Stoke at Plainmoor - we lost 0-4 infront of a crowd of 2,042. Duck didn't leave Plainmoor empty-handed - earning his South Western League Cup medal with a hat-trick in the 4-1 final win over Truro at St Austell."

I’ve now had a smashing PM from Gordon’s son, Gordon Jnr, who somehow managed to find our thread featuring his father. Gordon says his dad is now seventy-seven and carried on playing football until just a few years ago.
Gordon goes on to say:
"Dad fondly remembers his time at Torquay, he always recalls Eric Webber ringing him in the close season trying to get him to come back. Dad says that Eric told him he was going to build a team around him. In June 1955 my brother John Charles (after the footballer) was born. Mum did not want to go back, Torquay seemed a million miles away then. Dad chose to take a job in the steelworks.
Looking through the article really took my Dad back to those days. It brought a tear to my eye to listen to my Dad recall players he had not mentioned when his memory was good. I remember having a copy of the Norwich programme but sadly misplaced it.
I cannot remember dad playing in the sixties or seventies (except with me and my brothers) but he did get his boots out in the eighties. He later started an over 35s league in the area and, in the nineties, the league played a Leeds United veterans team including Gray, Lorimer and others. The team was managed by John Charles and so I got to meet my Dad's idol. It was lovely to read the research that the Torquay fans had collated.
Gordon Jnr, always a Torquay United fan"
Note the references to John Charles. Gordon mentions that his father has often spoken about the Leeds cup tie which, of course, featured the “Gentle Giant”. Elsewhere in the message, Gordon says that reading the TFF thread “made his father’s day" and thanks everybody who contributed to the thread.
