March 1961 - Brixham-born Tony Boyce joins the board at Plainmoor. That's not far short of fifty years ago. And - as a sign of things to come, maybe - a Saturday evening kick-off on Grand National day.
Alan Smith marrying a Paignton Carnival Queen....and former 'keeper Harold Gough (ex-Sheff U and England) making a return to Torquay (à la Mike Mahoney who we saw on the pitch at Plainmoor last Saturday).
Apparently Mike Mahoney was also at a recent game with Derek Harrison as the Herald Express reported:
"Veteran quartet Colin Bettany, Geoff Cox, Robin Stubbs and Dougie Clarke weren't the only great old United servants who were at Plainmoor last Saturday. Accompanying centre-half Derek Harrison, his old friend and teammate from the 1970s, was goalkeeper Mike Mahoney.
In 167 appearances from 1970-75 ex-Bristol City youngster Mike established himself as one of the best 'keepers ever to play for the club. He was sold for £60,000 to Newcastle, where he was also a big favourite until 1978 when he headed for the burgeoning North American soccer League and Chicago Sting.
He spent the rest of his playing and coaching career in the US, with Chicago, California Surf and the LA Lazers indoor club. After retiring, Mike, now 60, and his family returned to the UK and now live in Newton Abbot."
