Saturday's match was my 50th match of the season and my first ever visit to Farnborough even though I've been passing the ground for years. Saturday's match was a top of the table clash with Farnborough in 4th playing top of the table Braintree Town.
First impressions. Massive tarmac'd carpark with numbered spaces. Enough for 500 cars at least I would say. 3 quid to park seemed a bit steep but Farnborough FC chuck in a free programme (worth £2.50). So if you were going to buy a programme anyway car parking at 50p is a bargain. 10 quid to get in. Then a concourse area in between the turnstiles and the main stain where there is a decent quality food outlook not staffed by the normal idiots.
So the ground itself. It's quite a unique one to be honest. The main stand is a smallish granstand where the roof is is flat over half of the stand and sloped over the other half and the roof only covers about half the seating. The new stand behind one of the goals is still imcomplete. Most of the seating is finished, the roof supports are more or less in place but there's an enourmous amount of fresh air where their should be a roof. If they ever complete it, it'll be a nice stand.
Down the opposite side of the ground is a shallow all seater stand that was converted in 2009 from Terrace. Apart from the stand supports it's a nice stand to sit in with very comfy seats. If you sit in the front row you can sit very close to the action.
At the other end there is quite a large electronic scoreboard a deceptively deep partially covered terrace which has the feel of a Racecourse paddock about it. This terrace extends around the corner back towards the main stand.
All in all I thought it was quite a tidy little ground which was well staffed. Their PA system is a lot better than the Saisho pile 'o shite speakers we have at Plainmoor.
The match was a good one. The classic game of two halves. Farnborough with the lively Dale Binns on the left wing and ex Gull loanee Daryl McMahon pulling the strings in midfield went 2-0 up before half time only for Braintree to pull one back early in the second half through a fantastic strike from Sam Lechmere which I doubt any keeper in the world would've got to.
Final score 2-1
Some pictures. Slightly different style than normal..
Posh sprinkler system!!
I said you can sit close to the action.
I hope he didn't miss the goal!
