I have recently discovered your message board and write in the hope that someone out there might be able to help me. I am researching the history of the Southern Counties Amateur Championship, a competition that existed from 1906 to the abolition of amateur status in 1974.
According to the Times online some Devon games were played in Torquay over the years, although most Devon homes games were played at Plymouth.
Results I have traced at Torquay were: 17/12/10 Devon 3 Somerset 1 23/10/20 Devon 2 Somerset 0 25/03/22 Devon 0 Wiltshire 2 08/02/36 Devon 2 Wiltshire 2
I assume all were played at Plainmoor but can anyone out there confirm that for me? If not Plainmoor what other venue was used?
If anyone knows of any other Devon games played at Torquay (or elsewhere in Devon for that matter) I would love to hear from you.
Neil

Found another game at "Torquay". 10th December 1955, Devon v Somerset. If anyone knows the result and venue that would be great.

Always intrigued by "county" games in the SW - were they quite big occasions at one time? Think I'm right in saying that the successor competition, after the end of the amateur era (post-1974), was restricted to non-contract players and limped on until fairly recently. I saw just the one game - Somerset v Devon at Taunton sometime in the 1990s which was very low-key and poorly-attended. The demise of this type of football is a shame but I guess it belonged to a different era. And, although it retained much of its appeal for longer, county rugby looks to be going the same way.

Hi Neil,
There is a chap on the Devon FA Council with me called Jim Pearcy and he has very extensive records of all County Rep matches going back over many years. I will be seeing him during the week at some point so I will ask him how far his records go back & should be able to get most of the games played by Devon for you in this competition.

All these games were definitely at Plainmoor. I believe that Devon played some games at the Recreation Ground (now the home of Torquay Athletic RFC) between 1900 and 1904 when it was the home of Torquay United. The result of the 1955 game was Devon 2 Somerset 4. You can see an advert for the forthcoming match here: www.torquayfansforum.com/index.cgi?board=5070&action=display&thread=4888The 1910 game was quite a major happening for Plainmoor - which had just come into council ownership and become a "serious" soccer venue after six years of being hired out on an ad hoc basis for rugby and soccer after TARFC were kicked out in 1904. Ant, I would be interested in any county records you can lay your hands on. In return, I can give you proof of when the SDL was formed. Neil, can I ask how you tripped into our form? Was it from a link posted on the Tony Kempster site?

Devon County Football Association Handbook 1903-04 I'm a bit reluctant to scan this whole handbook as it is so delicate (but not as delicate as the 1897 one I have!), but it does show a county game played at Torquay on the 21st of October 1903, presumably at the Rec, against Gloucestershire when Devon wore the county colours of green and white. Interestingly it also has Torquay United down as an affiliated club as they were members of the East Devon League, details also below, with the contact details being for H. Tomney; presumably the Harry Tomney who was the United goalkeeper for the club's first match. (I've put this up as a seperate thread in the history room with more info on Harry Tomney, the house and his family)

According to another handbook I have, Devon shared the Southern Counties Championship with Norfolk in 1908/09 and then won it outright in 1910/11.

I've found another Devon County match played "at Torquay". Assume at Plainmoor.
Monday 26th October 1925 Devon 1 Middlesex 1
Middlesex had agreed to play in the Western Group "to save an awkward situation" according to the Enfield Gazette of the time. Not sure what that means but I do know that Middlesex played at Poltair Park in St Austell the previous Saturday as part of a double-header. Result of that one not known.
