By the time the match was played loanee John Sleeuwhenhoek was back in Brum... Although he did play a part in the original game!
The match was abandoned in the 63rd min due to torrential rain flooding the pitch. The score was 1-1 at the time and this was the first time a match had been abandoned at Plainmoor in which the first team were involved.

this was the first time a match had been abandoned at Plainmoor in which the first team were involved. Time for an apology Budleigh. You have forgotten the FA Cup tie with Spencer Moulton on 8 October 1921 - abandoned due to fog after 75 minutes with us 2-0 up.

Result : 1-0 (A Welsh). Attendance: 2770. The crowd given is for the replayed game. The original match attracted just 2,266 - which was noted in the Herald as the smallest crowd since records began in 1949. We had had smaller crowds before the War. No wonder we had to sell our best players to Bournemouth! It is good that Alan Welsh scored the winner in the replayed game - making up for the goal he scored in the first game which was wiped from the records.

Some people..
Ok, I'll re-phrase that one... twice to be sure!!
This was the first time a league match had been abandoned at Plainmoor in which the first team were involved.
OR...
This was the first time a match had been abandoned at Plainmoor in which the first team were involved, since joining the Football League.
(ps; Someone needs to update the Official Centenary History then...)

(ps; Someone needs to update the Official Centenary History then...) Tell me about it. Torquay United : The Official Centenary 1921-2021 That gives me ten years to re-write it. The Spencer Moulton abandoned game is in the 1899-1999 book. As for the text, my good friend John L was writing about fifty years of League football. He wasn't to know that someone would plagiarise his work and stick it in a Centenary History, distorting the context.

Unfortunately the text of the book makes out that the 1971 Shrewsbury game was the first as it states it being 'the first ever first team game to be abandoned at Plainmoor...'

A new programme was issued for the game played on 6th May 1971 still featuring Mal Lucas on the cover. Manager Allan Brown in his programme notes states ' Todays match is of course the one which was abandoned on 17th March because of a torrential rain storm. The score was 1-1 when the refree decided to call it off - to the relief of everyone.'
This was the Gulls 33rd and last home programme issued in that season.
