An interesting team photo from 1934… It may well be a common picture but I’ve not seen a copy before. What is interesting is that it shows just eleven players which makes me assume that it was taken before a game rather than as a squad line-up. This thought is further enhanced when we see who is, and who isn’t, in the photo. It is obviously the 1934/35 season as this was the only time this set of players were at the club together. It had to be taken after the 20th of October as both George Stabb and Ernie Steele are no longer involved, both players sold after the game on that date, and it must be before the 9th of February 1935 as Don Welsh had gone by then. So if it is a team before a game can it be pinned down any further? With a little research it’s possible to find the actual date this photo was taken. This eleven only played together twice; the home 2-0 win against Northampton on the 27th of October 1934 (the week after the departure of Steele and Stabb); and then again in the following game, away to Coventry on the 3rd of November, which was lost 6-0. This latter result probably being the reason this line-up was then changed. It must be safe to assume that the picture was taken at a home match and therefore was done so before the Northampton game, the 27th of October 1934. An additional note: This came from a 1930's Boys magazine called 'The Champion'.
