Well, that was an interesting week with a new manager being appointed for the first time during the life of this forum. He was certainly not everyone's cup of tea and unfortunately for an ex-member in the Cambridge area (where he has had first hand account of Ling's last job) this led to him deleting his account and I hope like many others before him he reinstates this...(just don't come back as an animal! ;D)
Although a lot of members picked up the odd vote, there was no one poster that stood out and the new poster in yellow won by the proverbial nose! It's not the first time that "otobe" has won this and won't be the last, but he has a good knowledge of football and I always look forward to reading his well considered posts. Well done mate and this was my favourite, taken from the big topic of the week!
I'm very interested in his time at Orient. A club who probably can attract a better standard of player than us, but certainly not one that what cash-rich. He produced a very tight team that played good attacking football and established them as a League One club. I think that his setting-up of a coaching network is also indicative of understanding a robust strategic approach of building a football club.
Anything negative from Cambridge fans doesn't really bother me. He might not have produced anything but a very poor BSP team, but it comes as no surprise - they have some very tangled Finances - hindered with the historic financial problems and loss of ownership of The Abbey. Some people might be foolish to believe that they are one of the biggest clubs in the BSP but they are not anywhere near - in terms of finances, support, infrastructure, ground and perhaps most importantly - stability. Definately on an even keel they should be pushing for a play-off place, but they are still paying for trying to get themselves promotion by spending well beyond their means. I think that Ling would have been better to have stayed away from there once he realised what a basket case it was there.
I liked the idea of Forster more and more as time went-on and was initially a bit disappointed that it wasn't him who got the job, but the Board had a slight advantage (!) over me in being able to not only meet all the candidates in person but to hear what their plans for the club were. They no doubt would have spoken about budgets, approaches to bringing-in players and generally how they see the way forward for the club. Who knows who was shortlisted / interviewed anyway - certainly not the Herald Express - by that very logic know-one knows the level of finance available to Ling next season or how the players might feel about his appointment.
Ling is going to need to bring-in players who can produce quickly given that we have lost the entire core of the squad and are left with just a couple of gems amongst some fairly ordinairy League Two players (I'll be very worried if we lose Zebs, O'Kane, Kee or Halpin - not bothered about the rest of them). I am concerned that there is much for Martin Ling to do before the players get back and start preparing for the season - his ability to bring-in the right player for the club will be crucial. I can only hope that his appointment starts bearing fruit on that front soon.
I wish him and the board all the best in what I expect will be a very, very tough season ahead.

Well, that surprised us all! Firstly, it is heartening to know that the club can actually keep things under wraps and working in the background without it being blabbed everywhere. Does that mean that a big-mouthed non-employee of the club is not on the scene anymore?
