Popped along to Wimbledon tonight. I consider myself to be more of a real ale man than an imbiber of Pimms. However, now that Tim Henman and his legions of adoring menopausal fans have found other summer past-times, I thought I'd take advantage of some afternoon sun and head over to leafy South West London to see if they'd let me into the All England Club. Was pretty impressed as it happens. Just £14 to get in when I arrived at around 4.30pm. Saw some world class tennis players in action, enjoyed the unrivalled facilities, and amused myself with the people watching as much as the tennis. And after purchasing a beer I still had more cash left in my pocket than I'd have after going through the turnstiles at Plainmoor and most other League 2 clubs...........

That's pretty good value considering you would have spent longer there than at a football match! Did you see Robson win her match? I think she is one very much for the future and long overdue in the woman's game.

Yeah, I saw the end of her match. Very impressive it was too.

Murray might not be a toff, but he's middle class. It cannot be denied that to become a world class tennis player - at least in this country - you need parents with lots of resources. However, I got into Wimbledon for under £15 and play at my local park for nothing. How much would it cost me to get into Silverstone and regularly drive an F1 car?

It costs £100 just for a ticket to watch the British GP To drive an F1 car...well, the Paul Ricard circuit in the south of France offers courses where you can do a handful of laps in former F1 cars. Costs over £3,000

Comparing tennis to Formula 1 is absolutely preposterous, ridiculous and desperate. Watching two people hit a ball over a net in no way compares to 200 mile an hour over-taking maneuvers, I suppose it`s down to what ever your interests are but I somehow can justify a day at the racing but could never justify a day at Rainbledon!

They certainly are incomparable. One is a game of finesse, centuries of tradition, accessible to everyone and played with a racquet. The other is just a bloody racket

I'm even handed as I don't like either. Formula 1 is just a very noisy procession and tennis is, well, just tennis. I did quite enjoy playing tennis when I was younger but to sit and watch it would be purgatory. Never driven a Formula 1 car, although I did drive my old Vauxhall around the circuit at Monaco so not sure if that counts. I suppose though there are people who think the same way about football .... and here I am about to start my 49th season of supporting the Gulls, which many really would class as purgatory!

I`ll give you finesse but you can`t state that it is accessable to everyone when it blatantly isn`t, tennis clubs in Torquay are quite expensive to join.

Comparing tennis to Formula 1 is absolutely preposterous, ridiculous and desperate. Absolutely agree. Tennis is a sport which relies on the skill, dedication, determination and athleticism of the individual, to name but a few. Formula scalextric relies on who has the best car, regardless of how talented the driver is he can only win if he has the best car. Sometimes the best driver gets the best car ie Vettel Red Bull, but other years the best car wins i.e Button/Virgin. A 'sport' where the car designers are the winners not the drivers. Stick me in a ferrari and I could probably beat Vettel in a Cosworth Also anyone can play tennis, unless you count the M25 not many of us get to drive round in circles for 2 hours.

You left out grunting, Pimms and caviar, that`s just in the hospitality suite! ;D That stuff's not my cup of tea either, but then neither is the Gold Club at Plainmoor. Tennis can be elitest, and the fusty tennis clubs full of pensioners and Tarquins don't appeal to me either. But you can't say you don't like a sport because it's played by 'toffs' and then say you love F1. It's hard to think of a less accessible sport than F1! (and that's if it IS a sport). I don't know about the public tennis court situation in Torbay, but any kid in Torquay who wants to try his hand at what he's seen on the TV at Wimbledon is going to be able to do so if he wants to enough. Not so with F1 - no matter how 'exciting' he finds it to watch from his armchair.
