The second part of the brilliant Argyle early history is now online:
www.greensonscreen.co.uk/argylehistory.asp?era=1890-1895
It is a staggeringly well-researched piece of work!
The latest instalment contains a few mentions of Torquay and Plainmoor - don't believe Mr Luscombe when he says there was no soccer in Torquay before United!
The Torbay club who played Argyle in the 1890/91 Devon Senior Cup played for just one season at the Recreation Ground. This was to part-fill a gap after Torquay Athletic had been lured over to Paignton Cycle Track - Torbay played alternate weeks with Torquay Wanderers RFC. Athletic returned after one season away - Torbay were kicked out and folded.
The soccer baton passed to Torquay YMCA. They played at Plainmoor but not actually on the field where our ground is - but on the other side of Warbro Road (or Warberry Lane as was) as reported in the Torquay Times 25/9/1891:
It was to this field - across the road from the current away end that Plymouth Argyle ventured on Boxing Day 1892, coming away with a 6-5 win:
Here's the report of the return game on February 25 1893:
One more early Argyle trip to Torquay, faithfully recorded in the Greens on Screen stats, came on Boxing Day 1898 when their reserve team came to the Recreation Ground to take on the Torquay Soccer Club. This is the football club that actually was founded in 1898 - one year before United and five before the South Devon League.
I first tripped into this club when trying to confirm the exact date that Torquay United was founded - universally believed to be in 1898 because Mr Luscombe had said so and nobody thought he could be wrong.
