This is placed in the History Room rather than the Programme Room as I think it has a more historical feel to it.
The programme from the Third Division North v South representative game played on the 8th of October 1956 in front of an attendance of 14,500.
The match was played at Highfield Road, Coventry with the score 2-1 to the South
Also shown is a magazine photograph of the South’s line-up autographed by Torquay United’s Don Mills amongst others.
All those in the programme feature in the photo, with the addition of Pickering of Northampton. (See below)
Don Mills played in this game, as he had in the first (16th March 1955); the second (13th Oct 1955) when he scored, and the fourth (2nd of April 1957), but not in the final match (30th October 1957). Interestingly in the first game Radio Devon’s Ken Furphy lined-up for the North, opposite Mills, being a member of the Darlington team at that time.
Shown in the programme are the line-ups from the first two previous games where unfortunately Peter Hill of Coventry is listed in the second game at number 8 instead of Don Mills who played in his place.
Another team member was Patrick ‘Pat’ Parker, a local Devon boy who was born in Bow, near Crediton, and actually played for Newton Abbot in the early fifties. He had been with Plymouth Argyle but didn’t feature in any first team games and so joined Newton Abbot. He was then spotted by Southampton manager Sid Cann and played 132 games for them.
The North’s manager was Harry Storer, also previously manager of Coventry, and an excellent cricketer and who holds the record for Derbyshire’s first wicket stand of 322 with Joseph Bowden in a match played against Essex in 1929.
The referee was non-other than Arthur Ellis, quite possibly one of the most famous football officials of all time.
The trainer was the great George Raynor who took the small country team of Sweden and achieved gold at the 1948 Olympics before a third place in the 1950 Olympics. He then took them to the 1958 World Cup finals, losing in the final to a Brazilian side containing a young Pele. It was between bouts as manager of Sweden that he managed various club sides including Lazio and Juventus, and for five months he was at Coventry City as trainer to Harry Warren, the manager of this representative side.
The magazine picture line-up shows Mills in the team and is autographed by Don Mills along with team members Albert McPherson (Walsall), a reserve in the match; John Elsworthy (Ipswich) who was picked for the Wales squad to go to the 1958 World Cup but was unfortunately left behind as the Welsh FA had run out of funds; and Jim Langley (Brighton), a future England player. In this picture all the team plus reserves are featured along with an extra reserve, the afore-mentioned Pickering of Northampton who doesn’t appear to have played a part in the game.

The second half of the match was broadcast on BBC television, which was the first occasion that a match had been televised from Peel Park.
Don Mills scored for the South in the first half. Reg Ryan equalised with a penalty in the second half, followed by goals from John Thomas Connor for the North and Ernie Morgan for the South. The final score was 3–3

W Holden scored the first goal for the North, which was followed by an equaliser from P Langman for the South. Soon after the start of the second half Ron Greener failed to score for the North from a penalty. The winning goal was then scored by Alf Ackerman for the North in the last minute of the game.
