Away to Chester in Division Four in 1958. I guess that was our first ever league game "up north" even though some of the occasional North Midlands occupants of Division 3 (South) must have seemed a distant proposition for us in those pre-motorway days. And we were to be welcomed at Sealand Road by a Chester chairman called Mr Argyle with a mention in the small print of upholding the "prestige of Chester and the north".
Mind - with Carlisle, Workington, Barrow, Gateshead, Darlington and Hartlepools all on the fixture list - this would have been one of the less-demanding treks.
Note the mention of the recent World Cup. The Brazilians - with the teenage Pele - bursting on the scene at exactly the same time as Division Four. I'd not thought of that before. A brave new world for all to relish.
