I have just watched a re run of saturdays opponents Nuneatons recent home game shown on BT Sports. The pitch looks extremely hard and bumpy and Nuneaton look like a half decent team imo. I couldnt help wondering if their impressive centre half Theo Streete was any relation to that giant centre half Floyd Streete who played in the notorious Wolves game at Plainmoor almost 30 years ago. To this day this is the only time in over 40 years that i have felt intimidated up at Plainmoor. For some reason i found myself in the front row of the grandstand and duly jumped up when Nardiello scored. All i could see were some extremely large coloured gentlemen who were glaring at me from the enclosure directly in front. I swiftly proceeded to sit back down and clap politely pretending not to notice.......  |

I like Dave Thomas. He's written well and faithfully about Torquay United for an awfully long time. But a reference to the "Beautiful Game"? Oh dear. I cringe when I hear or read those words.
But I suspect it was an ugly affair. I wasn't there to say. It was the eighties. I was far away. Everton 2 Chelsea 2 that afternoon. And it may have been a few days before I heard what had happened at Plainmoor. Ah yes. Back in Stefano's pre-social media days.
I believe Wolves had something of an "element". The "Subway Army" or some such. They also had a liking for the seaside. There was considerable trouble the following year when Wolves were the visitors for Scarborough's first game in the Football League.
Oddly enough I was to see Wolves twice that month; each time against Chorley in the FA Cup at Bolton. I don't recall anything untoward. But I did enjoy the stuffing Chorley eventually gave Wolves. 3-0 in the second replay.
Edwards at number eleven for the visitors that evening at Plainmoor. My Rothmans Football Yearbook has that as Neil Edwards rather than Dean Edwards. Mind you, it also records them as both playing in the same position in Wolves' previous two games.
A fascinating press cutting and vivid memory from Gullone. He's also reminding us of the benefits of history once again. Think of Plainmoor in those days; "in no state" according to Dave Thomas. Look at the league table. It's almost making me feel good about being at Plainmoor last night.
