Lots of voting been going on this week and basically all came down to a good argument on the Gillingham match day thread that turned into a great read.
After our second defeat in a row following a great run, thoughts turned to getting in some loan players to freshen up the squad. Of course, the same argument that Ling used last October was brought up again but the debate morphed out of all recognition going from should strikers score? Looking at various tactics employed by managers, other teams such as Barcelona, the record of Bill Shankley and finally analysing the game of subbuteo!
The points made got quite complicated with both Chelston and Alpine Joe resorting to pictures to illustrate their points and whether Chelston's new nickname of Woodygull will stick, well only time will tell or at least in a mo or two! However, with votes being attracted to both sides of the argument, one post did seem to resonate more than the rest, perhaps fittingly by an ex player although only in a pub league, at least according to that giant were-rabbit!
So really well done to Stefano on cutting through the piffle and hopefully Torquay can respond by going on a run to live up to his pre season prediction!
"Football is a simple game made complicated by people who should know better" ... Bill Shankley ... the quite successful manager of Liverpool Football Club.
I love a match report that tells me that a cross was delivered into the box and headed in at the far post. Simple, uncomplicated, and clear.
But "4-1-4-1 reverting to 5-3-1-1 when pressed in the second half", "playing in the hole", and "dropping deep" might as well be reported in Cantonese for what I understand of it.
Just as I knew Mo was a left back I knew that Robin Stubbs was a centre forward. He did what centre forwards do. Scored goals. Quite a lot of them actually. Although Mo may not have done what left backs do he at least stood around in the area of the pitch that left backs are meant to stand. He didn't complicate things at all for the uninitiated supporter.
Bill Shankley gets my vote ....
