Here’s a key passage: the arrival of Mal Lucas and the departure of Fred Binney. [ Lucas stayed for a while and played around 120 league games for the club. He wasn’t everybody’s cup of tea and I can clearly remember one of our neighbours vowing that he’d never watch enough another match at Plainmoor whilst “that useless bastard is in the team”.He didn’t. Nor did he ever see another game during the rest of his life which lasted for around ten years after Mal Lucas moved on. Isn’t it strange how people sometimes stop going to football and then completely lose the habit? And the reasons they give to explain.... As for Fred Binney: League games (league goals) Torquay United 67-70: 34 (10) Exeter City 68-74: 177 (90) Brighton 74-77: 70 (35) St.Louis Stars (USA) 77: 18 (9) Plymouth Argyle 77-80: 71 (39) Hereford United 79-82: 27 (6) Oh, bugger.
