Has anybody got any thoughts on the upcoming Olympic Games? I am concerned about security and suicide bombers.

Seventy years ago, it was the German bombers and twenty to thirty years ago it was the Irish ones but you have just got to get on with it. Tried to get some tickets for various events but pretty much failed. Looking forward to following this and hopefully we can exceed the medal tally for the previous games to make this a success.
One impact it will have on us is that the football season is delayed by a week. May help us if we get to the play offs again though.

As someone who lives in London, I've got mixed feelings about it tbh.
The politicians love stuff like the Olympics of course because they get to bask in the glory it all without lifting a finger and can denounce the naysayers as unpatriotic curmudgeons. We're told it's all about 'regeneration' and whilst there's been enormous investment in stuff like London's transport interchanges and hubs (massive refits to no less than three of the city's railways stations – Kings Cross, London Bridge and Blackfriars), the reality is that this amounts to little more than taxpayer subsidies to the likes of Balfour Beattys – a firm that spent most of the last two years plotting attacks on its employees terms and conditions. Then there's the spectacle of c*nts like Tony Blair, Ken Livingstone, David Cameron and Boris Johnson revelling in it all as they put on a show for the plebs and talk about London and the UK being "open for business". To say nothing of the vast amounts spent on the Olympic Village itself and the disruption incurred by people who live/d in that part of East London.
That said, as a sports fan, it's pretty exciting to have wall-to-wall sport on the TV, and I'm really looking forward to the cycling and the athletics. Having lived in Manchester during the Commonwealth Games it's undeniable that the buzz such an event generates means you'd have to be pretty miserable not to derive any enjoyment from it. Hopefully us mortals will be able to use the velodrome, swimming pool and other facilities after the event, as people in Manchester have been able to.
In terms of security, there's always a risk with such a high profile event. I personally will be avoiding public transport for the duration, not out of fear of attack but because it will be rammed to capacity!

Isn't it time that England, N. Ireland, Scotland and Wales did their own thing at the Olympics? I wonder how the medals tables would have looked?

Ok I shall be spending it at Passignano sul Trasimeno in Umbria and whilst it will not be an Olympic free zone as the Italians are passionate about sport the 8 day Palio delle Barche and the 10 day Trasimeno Blues Music Festival will be enough of a diversion. Nice to see this thread has been placed on the correct board ... the Popside rather than Other Football and Sports Room! A recognition perhaps that the modern day Olympics is a political circus rather than a serious sporting event!

Has anybody got any thoughts on the upcoming Olympic Games? I am concerned about security and suicide bombers. I'm with Chelston on this. Really not fussed, even with a GB footie team. Friends (ex colleagues) being stiffed to provide manpower when they would otherwise have the chance of spending a few weeks with the kids during the summer holidays (and thats a bloody rarity nowadays). All because the fe*kwits that worked out the figures have problems coping with 2+2=4? Total waste of money IMO. The games should be held in one place (tradition would say Greece!!) and paid for by the TV rights etc which seem to go to oil the greasy wheels in the IOC (chiselling scumbags that they are). Every bit as bad as FIFA

I had a wander around the Olympic site last week (..well when I say a wander it turned into an 11 mile walk around the whole site but whatever) and it's bloody impressive what they've done with what was an absolute dive in Stratford. That central area of Stratford has really been improved with the stadiums, the landscaping (most of which is still to come) and the absolutely huge and awesome Stratford Westfield shopping centre. That's going to be it's biggest legacy, tidying up a horrible part of East London and turning it into something decent. However it also represents a massive splurge of cash on a city that already gets more than it's fair share (it's also getting £16bn for Crossrail and HS2 basically benefits it as much as the rest of the country).
The Olympic Games themselves will be fun, I have tickets for the tennis - taking advantage of not having to go through Wimbledon's usual stupid rules for geting tickets, but ultimately they're not going to change much in the long run. Greater sports participation my arse but for what it's done for Stratford it's definitely got a thumbs up from me.
That said Stratford away from the Olympic site is still a dump...
