That Philadelphia reference is all about signing Andy Provan when he was playing for a team called Philadelphia Atoms Some years later we signed Bruce Rioch from Seattle Sounders. Makes you wonder from how many countries Torquay United have signed players.

Interesting clip here. The good old days of the NASL. Who needs Pele and Best when you've got Provan and Fryatt? That's remarkable stuff really in the way the clip concentrates on Provan and Fryatt. Provan went to America after much success at Southport and Fryatt had his second brief spell at Torquay during his time at Philadelphia. With his stints at Bradford PA, Southport, Stockport, Blackburn and Oldham I could never not think of Fryatt as a player from the north of England. Yet he was born at Swaythling near Southampton and you can hear his Hampshire accent in that clip. The NASL - which had clubs in both the United States and Canada - was a fascinating chapter in the 1970s and 1980s with its mixture of incredibly big names and journeymen pros. Looking through the books I'd forgotten that we signed Tony Brownfrom the wonderfully-named Jacksonville Tea Men.
