In a week that has seen us miss out on promotion for the third time in the last five years (heck, if we had won those three promotions, we would be in the premiership next year! ;D ) perhaps fitting that this week's winner came up with this level headed post about where we are as a club. So once again, well done to Pete, deservedly this week's winner!
Its a plain fact of football life that any club with a similar fan base and income to ours and at our level has to have limited ambition.
The priorities must be financial and on field success I'm afraid secondary.
Throwing money at unrealistic and fanciful dreams is a recipe for disaster. Just ask any Argyle, Portsmouth, Port Vale fan etc etc.
We would all like to believe that our little club with average gates of well under three thousand in a good season, could compete in todays Championship. Some would even like to think we could perhaps one day be a Premiership side ;D. do a Wigan or a Swansea perhaps. Believe me it will never ever happen and there are many many reasons why it cannot and will not.
If we ever again reach the dizzy heights of League one, and stay there for more than one season then I will be a very happy supporter. Realistically that's all we can achieve that is perhaps sustainable. Any ambition has to be realistic, there has to be a point where we can progress no further.
The way we are doing things now is unfortunately the only way unless of course you know some rich Arabs or Sheiks. willing to invest in a pipe dream and lose a few million.
Yep we have over achieved for many seasons. Considering our income, the local football crazy population and geographical location our true level is ...well what do you think?
All these thoughts mind you disappear when we are having some genuine success as we have done in the last few seasons but Im usually brought swiftly down to earth again when we fail to build on it and lose players and for whatever reason squads break up and we have to start the process all over again.
Its the way it is Im afraid.
Don't be so dispondent Milber.
