His post match interview was cringeworthy embarrassing. Same old same old, "if we had scored another I felt we would have gone on to win it" gotta laugh.

Great use of Photoshop to get John Milton in the background there, AJ!
Just got back in. Good result and performance against a fairly disjointed Rovers team, nowhere near as strong as the one that Trollope put-out against us in our last league encounters.. I will leave it to the experts to provide the match reports and facts, but here are some musings:
I must admit that I hadn't been able to see us since the Tivvy match and I was very pleased with the performance of Atieno (tricky and perhaps if he had scored that goal at the end when he dribbled around 3 of their players we could rightfully call him the "Kenyan Messi"!).
Howe has been a revelation. His control was excellent, he was very powerful and brought other players into the game. If he carries that weight it doesn't bother me if he keeps putting-in such a high energy performance like that, but I must say that it concerns me that he might strain his joints or muscles.
Mansell was vastly improved in midfield - just as Oastler was very able at right back. I really thought that playing players in their natural position is a stroke of genius by Ling. Long may it continue.
Olejnik isn't that tall, but I thought his position and kicking (except when he knocked it Kuffour at the end and we were lucky to get it away for a corner) was very good. I think that like the two new forwards, he has been a very astute signing by Ling.
Everyone else had fairly sold games, although Robertson gave a few free kicks away for shit-pulling and that is concerning, although I think that he should have had some free-kicks for Harrold's constant niggling. Saah looks pretty steady as well.
O'Kane was very good at times today, although sometimes he shows a touch of naivety in not getting to the ball quickly enough, particularly in the last ten minutes. Other than that I think that he is maturing as a player and surely if he keeps it up he'll be gone to a bigger club (if he's really lucky he go to a club as massive as Bristol Rovers!) soon or later.
All-in-all I think it was a fair result, although I think that we could have really sewn the match up with a few glorious chances at the end. The only disappointing performance was that of Billy Kee - profligate with the ball and did little to chase-down the Rovers players when they had bags of space to lump the ball forward as the clock wound-down. I certainly see Howe and Atieno as being the first-choice strikers at the moment by a fair margin.
I wasn't expecting us to do much better than lower mid-table but I think that there are some encouraging signs there. I won't get carried-away but I think that Ling has got a decent balance to the team (something not done by playing Stanley and Gill as a partnership - haha!).
Good to see Bevs get a nice reception when he was walking out for the second half. Not the best keeper at this level by a long way but a nice chap and did his best for us. I thought our support was excellent today and got behind the players well and didn't really get carried-away with the "Buckle thing" and I think the players did well not to lose their heads (like Paul Wotton nearly did when he asked Zebroski to pass him the salt without saying "please"!).
Does this mean that the rovers supporters will stop coming-along and a) telling us how pleased they are that the no-necked Messiah has assembled a fantastic squad and they are so confident and b) telling us how good the likes of Bevan and Zebroski are looking?

Great picture Alpine Joe!!
Great performance today, thought we deserved it and defended well. Rovers fans moaning about the ref but that is just sour grapes. Howe and Atieno combined well and we looked dangerous on the break in the second half. If Eunan's legs had been a bit longer it could have been three! Heard Buckle's post match interview, he took it on the chin but he must be gutted!! Well done to all the players and Mr Ling!!

Not so sure Chuckle took it on the chin - same old bollocks from him, should have had a penalty, played brilliantly - he seemed to insinuate that on another day they would have won 10-0. He is a total thingy and cannot wait to see him on the BBC tonight - we won't better this result all season, a fantastic effort.

A nice three points. Considering Paul Buckle was playing things down yesterday and in the programme notes, he did seem rather flustered in the first half, I thought. Thoroughly enjoyable day out, though pretty poor away facilities all things considered. I was very impressed with Atieno and Howe today. Howe's hold up play is exceptionally good for this level on the two showings I've had so far. Atieno was causing them all sorts of problems all day. Am guessing Robertson and Harrold can feel that they've been in a game today, such was the non-stop arms and legs and pulling and pushing from the pair of them today. I'll give ratings, I reckon.
Olejnik 6 (a mistimed cross, but a couple of good shot-stopping saves. Variable distribution) Oastler 7 (solid) Saah 7 (composed) Robertson 6 (marks knocked off for resorting to too obvious shirt-pulling against the ginger donkey late-on) Nicholson 7 (made up for pace deficiency with sensible positioning today) Morris 7 (intelligent player. Not much pace there, but plenty of guile) Mansell 8 (everywhere he needed to be and everywhere full stop, today) O'Kane 6 (fits and starts) Stevens 7 (clever play for the first and with a licence to roam, was certainly proving a point in that first half. Needed shoring up in 2nd half and rightly sacrificed for McPhee) Howe 8.5 (Quality hold up play and distribution) Atieno 8.5 ( Zebroskiesque handful)
Subs used: McPhee 6 (Shored it up, though new entrants to this fully charged affair took time to adjust bar Kuffour) Kee 5 (little miffed he didn't chase down a couple of balls, particularly one trickling toward corner that Virgo picked up near the end)
Rovers seemed to resort to hoofball a bit in the second half, I thought. Bypassing Gill does not seem to me the best tactic on display from them. In terms of our ex-players, none of them shone, bar Kuffour who looked lively from a distance, and, in the second-half, Bevan, with two extremely good saves, one which would have had us 3 up.
Good to see a few faces today and always good to see Jon, however brief that generally is, as ding-dong affairs always seem to happen when I see you away from home, Jon.
Wonderfully vocal away support from all areas today. Players must have enjoyed that backing and, as you would expect, were beaming at the end. I now have a lucky t-shirt that I will be taking to Aldershot on Tuesday. Here's hoping "Buckle's Next Signing" works it's magic at the Rec.

In the first half I thought we were far the better side. Our technique and passing were a class above them and it showed. If Saah had made it 3-0 with the header I don't think any gas fan in the Mem would've complained. They played like we used to in the conference at times, very direct and with not much intelligence. Both of their centre halves was awful and made to look exactly how shite they were by one of the better striker combinations I've seen play for Torquay. Howe and Atieno can both run the channels, can both hold the ball up well, can both finish and both have excellent speed of foot and control. Very pleased with both of those aquisitions. I was also impressed with Saah and how well both he and Robertson dealt with that cheating bastard Harrold, who can't jump or challenge for the ball without putting his arm across the throat of his opponent. He was exactly the same last year.
They huffed and puffed a bit in the second half without really causing anything too threatening. We dropped back a bit and for 10-15 minutes Joe Oastler had his hands full of Carayol but did ok and stuck to his guns. PB then very kindly took Carayol off and brought Zebroski on. When Carayol was down one wing, Ayinsah down the other and Kuffour in a free role they looked like a pretty decent side I thought. But again we should have extended the lead after they scored from one of those dicking around moments.
As for the other newbies. Robert Ojenik looks pretty solid but needs to give us a bit more confidence he can deal with crosses. I noticed he chose to punch a couple of times in the second half with the same type of balls he tried to catch in the first half. Taiwo and Rene are both class acts I think, especially Rene who is an excellent signing, but one who isn't quite fit. Just think how good he'll be when fit. Ian Morris has excellent technique and an eye for a pass, but a bit like Rene Howe isn't fit yet. I thought he gave possesion away a few times too many in the second half, but he's another classy player.
Mention must also go to both Danny Stephens and Eunan O'Kane who both had good games and got stuck in. I think that a comment I made about Eunan not being ready for central midfield is looking a bit shaky on today's evidence. I think it helps to have Manse with him but he's tackling and tracking back a lot more under Ling and the same can also be said for Daniesta.
We stood in the home terrace today. I didn't really trust myself not to say something if I head any stupid comments towards Paul Buckle or Chris Zebroski. My heart sunk when I saw the Judas flag being hoisted up. Judas how exactly? More cringeworthy idiocy. It just makes us look like a bunch of thick twats. Nice view from the bottom of the DAS stand though although I've never heard a crowd moan quite so much at the ref. I thought he did pretty well on the whole.
On todays evidence we should have a pretty decent season I reckon. As for Bristol Rovers I think it's going to take a lot from Scott Bevan to win the Gas fans over and I'll be interested to see how he deals with the likes of Jo Kuffour, who along with Carayol have abilities above this division and with crowd favourite Byron Anthony who is an awful centre half. Whether or not Paul Buckle can be ruthless enough to show him the door is anyone's guess. Having said that, Adam Virgo looks equally as bad and he signed him.
A good win though. If they had scored in the 5-10 minute period after they scored the first we could've been looking at a defeat but full credit to the lads, the McPhee substitution was a good one and taking Carayol off was a particulary bad one.
Kudos to Rob and his great t-shirt. I enjoyed multitasking by looking at your picture message and eating a top class pasty before the match.

His post match interview was cringeworthy embarrassing. Same old same old, "if we had scored another I felt we would have gone on to win it" gotta laugh. I think he may have been right actually. I think I tend to agree with you to a point. They were getting stronger by the minute but it was only because we were getting tired as we ran and ran. Well one or two walked and walked as they had no pace left. If the match had run another 5 or 10 minutes I think we would have conceded another one. But that is the crux of the matter. The match is over 90 minutes not 110. They did not do what was required of them, and we did. Our guys were awesome. Ok, some of you marked down one or two of the players but without exception they all played their part in this brilliant brilliant win. As far as I am concerned the The ghost of Paul Buckle is well and truly laid to rest. We don't need to goad him any longer. we don't need to constantly whinge about the way he left. What he did, he did. It's done and dusted. Gone. Never to be brought up again. Lets all put this matter to bed and get on with our lives. We move on. The Squad that Martin Ling has assembled is damn good for the size our our club and budget. The quality is maybe slightly better than last year. It remains to be seen if it is singificantly better. The kniting of the squad is something we need to see over the next few weeks as they settle in and if the slight niggles within the changing room remain slight or settle then we are in for a good time. We had a great day today. You could see what it meant to a large number of the players and even one or two of the newer members had obviously been reminded more than once what it meant to the more established guys. Lets get behind the guys and really give our all for the rest of the season. Coooommmme on yooooo Gullllsssss! Glostergull

Early days , one swallow etc etc but a very encouraging result and demonstrates that we do have some real quality in the squad. Lings team selection and sub tactics/timings have also impressed me . Also getting improved performances from some including the much maligned Danny Stevens is a big plus . Not getting carried away just yet we are only at the start of another tough season with many improving clubs with massive resources compared to ours. Today's result was very sweet and a bit special and now the aim must be to finish above the "deserters" at Rovers.

Sweet result today (gas fans moaning like hell after the game in the nearby pubs) we were like I said to them the better team on day.And at times we out sang the Bristolians. He's a name for the future for the Yellow Army Saah he will be I think "a good un" no doubt.
