Here’s an article from yesterday’s programme regarding Tony Currie’s time at Plainmoor. The great TC’s memory may be letting him down in places but I’m sure it’s part of the process of anesthetisation. He’s still listed in the SUFC programme as a “club ambassador”: This is a picture of Bramall Lane taken from Simon Inglis’s original grounds book. It’s late 1940s/early 1950s and shows cricket rather than football. Yesterday we were in the replacement of the stand, square to the wicket, towards the top right of the picture backing on to Bramall Lane itself. Apparently the pavilion was demolished in 1981 – some time after Yorkshire’s last visit in 1973. Memory is now telling me I attended some sort of student Christmas “do” there, probably in 1974 just after the new football stand opened:

well stayed in torquay last night after venturing back from sheffield, what a frustrating game that was,1 nil up for 70 long agonising minutes, stevens missing a glaring chance to put us 2 up and out of reach.Only for ellis to score a crazy own goal that changed the game completely. Before the game i genuinely thought privately we were going to get thumped, after the game had finished it was frustrating to walk away knowing we could of quite easily of won this one, playing a sufc side that quite honestly are pretty poor, which leads me to believe that if they are 5th in league one and we were to get promoted we could easily hold our own in this division.Still an enjoyable day out, took in sheffield fcs ground on the way, took some nice photos, and the folk of sheffield very pleasant.Quite a few of their fans approached us afterwards and said we were robbed,i actually dont think that,i think we were the masters of our own downfall. Despite elliss howler and bobbys mistake,i thought our goalie was again outstanding,he made some cracking saves and kept our lead intact until ellis popped it in the onion bag, back to reality now,22 points to safety as far as i am concerned

Get your eyes tested then, he took an almighty swing at it with his left peg. Defo a swing Take it out with Lingy, aussie. He called it a "cheap mistake". It was a great shame as it knocked the stuffing out of us. I hope it hasn't done the same for him.

Bumped into Manse in B&Q this morning who was obviously gutted like the rest of us and thought (as well) that they were there for the taking.

The stewards and many of the fans from Sheffield felt that the team knew they had been in a game not a walk over. Unlucky as we threw it away to be honest.

And, if you don’t know the story of Derek Dooley, find out at the earliest opportunity. My mother was working at Sheffield hospital at the time Dooley lost his leg and I remember her talking of the tremendous grief and despair in the city at the time. I remember her saying that the staff at the hospital swore blind that the leg would have been saved if he had been brought home to Sheffield for treatment. Unfortunately, I never had the opportunity to reopen the conversation as an adult. Dooley would have been manager at Wednesday at the time, and as a little boy I could never believe that old codgers in their 30s or 40s like Revie or Clough or Dooley could ever have been young enough to actually play the game. Can youngsters of today believe that 60 year-old Kenny Dalglish used to be able to play a bit? Dooley's goalscoring record is unbelievable. Have any other players ever averaged more than a goal a game throughout their league careers or is Dooley the only one?

Another grand day out - thanks to Stuart, James and Chelston.
It was good to meet up with Rags again - I think of him as a dear friend even though he is a cad and a bounder.
Good to see Barty on his birthday - although I didn't get the chance to say goodbye as he rushed off to empty his 56-year-old bladder as soon as the final whistle blew.
As for the game, you could argue that if a few key moments had fallen the other way we could have sneaked a 2-1 win. You could equally argue that if a few key moments had fallen the other way we could have been thrashed 5-1. Neither outcome would really have been a fair reflection of the game. We lost to a better team, but put up a decent fight.
I did say at half-time that I was loathe to say that Ellis was having an excellent game as we were overdue an Ellis howler - which arrived on cue.
Olejnik was absolutely superb. The tip-over from the free-kick looked spectacular but was the kind that a "shot-stopper" might fancy. The one low down to his left when the free-kick was bent hard and low around the wrong side of the wall was really world- class.
His blunder reminded me of a story Dave Thomas recounted recently about John Turner making an error after an amazing display of goalkeeping up at Wigan. Player-manager Mike Green came over to him and said "So you are human then!". Olejnik was, as James has mentioned, given a lot of tricky backpasses to deal with. The law of averages meant one was likely to go wrong - Oastler should never have thrown the ball back to him with Evans in such close proximity.
Nicho should never have pumped the ball forward after the first goal - it really was a time for slowing the game down after conceding. The unchallenged run towards the box seemed to be something that happened a lot earlier in the season but has happened less since Lathrope has been in the holding role. Would his presence have made a difference?
After that whinge, we mustn't really dwell too much on the individual errors - although you hope that we continue to learn. We were under immense pressure for a long time, and fourth division players will crack under sustained pressure.
Sheffield United's players are, as you would expect, Championship quality. Our players are nearly Championship quality - but not quite. They put in enough of a battle for us to be proud of them - and here's hoping our two stalwarts Mansell and Nicholson sign extended contracts soon.
Now bring on Willand in the Devon Bowl - another chance for cup glory.

Interesting (and Kenny was an incredible player when I was a kid!) - and I certainly know the story about Derek Dooley.....
When I was a nipper we went on a week long school trip to t'North and were based in Sheffield (Collegiate Crescent Halls of Residence, if I recall - a place I happened to visit a few years later but that's a story for another day and another age rating!). Along with a trips down the pit, the old steelworks, Harry Ramsden's, the Television and Film museum in Bradford (?) the Moors and other tourist places we went on a guided tour of Bramall Lane. It was in the summer so we were lucky to see Dave Bassett in the carpark , but we were lucky enough to be taken around my none other than Tony Currie himself - I was only about 13 at the time, so would only have been about 5 or 6 when he played for us, but I was pretty sure that it was him - as our know it all football buff explained to everyone who Tony Currie was (and it was an Exeter school so they wouldn't have heard of him) I plucked up the courage to ask him about his time at Torquay, he was really nice about it and I recall him speaking fondly of the club and his stint there. He told us about the story of Derek Dooley (who I believe was SUFC Chief Executive at the time) and his Christmas Eve dismissal, which always stuck in my mind nearly 20 years later. In return for his story I was able to answer his question as to what was the only other current football league club conjoined to a county cricket ground (Northampton, but also I recall that Feethams held a Durham match around that time as well - I didn't get a bonus point though!).
I've always had a soft spot for Sheffield United since, a really good club, I would have loved to have made it if I hadn't had other commitment, good to read a load of people had a decent time regardless of the end result.

Sheffield United's players are, as you would expect, Championship quality. Our players are nearly Championship quality - but not quite. Yeah, I think that's true. But as I said on the day, if this is all there is to the difference between mid-table League 2 and top end of League 1, then Crawley are going to fly through that league - the only thing that would stop them getting promoted is their ground, but I should imagine they'd ground-share for a while until they could update Broadfield or build a new stadium

Remembering, of course, that this was a one off game and the league is 46 where consistency is the key. SUFC may have just had an off day?

Remembering, of course, that this was a one off game and the league is 46 where consistency is the key. SUFC may have just had an off day? Remarkably astute point Marty. Also, before anyone gets too euphoric, Sheff U are not a "championship" team, they're in L1 team for a reason and that's because they're not good enough to be at a higher level, just the same as us being in L2. One off cup games are all well and good, but as our recent seasons have shown, upsets happen regularly and it doesnt mean we can make a fist of playing at a higher level yet. Bury and Stevenage may be sat comfortably at the minute but Chesterfield and Wycombe are certainly struggling

The case in point is that we beat Blackpool at home in our promotion season and 18 months later they were in the premiership! Despite Exeter getting promotion that season, we actually found it very difficult just to survive in a higher league subsequently and a big change in personal was required.

Take it out with Lingy, aussie. Why? Because of the rest of my post in particular the sentence immediately after explaining why, which you haven't quoted, aussie.
