Barty - this was the home games only filter. I do beg your pardon. I should have suspected you had plethora of filters. There’s much to be said for being a completist: 5/10/2010 A v Swindon Town AM Cup (aka JPT) L 0-2 3,625

After a very enjoyable Christmas Day I am looking forward to this one, particularly after only seeing the two home matches since the end of October although both of these were pretty special in their own way. With three matches to look forward to over the next week, my withdrawal symptoms should be pretty well sated.
Swindon don't concede many and with our depleted attack, I can't see that changing today and both our defence and midfield will have to be at their best. Having said that, Atieno has got a bit of pace about him and it will be interesting to see how the 4-3-3 formation suits him.

I am trying to look at this from a positive aspect, but it really hard to see past a defeat I'm afraid. I have been saying all season that we have 11 good players, we have a good 'team', however our squad is lightweight. With 2 of the 11 missing today the 2 that are likely to step into the breach haven't shown enough to suggest that they even deserve to be playing in this league. Although Morris has shown the odd flash that he could be good enough he hasn't been anywhere near consistent enough and all that Atieno has shown so far is that it was a big mistake signing him in the first place. Its going to be a tough 3 games and if we could sneak a point or 2 against Swindon & Oxford and a win against Plymouth then that would be a great return. So an Atieno hatrick and 9 points it is then

Cannot see anything but a right shellacking for us today - a point would be a great result. I think I would actually take a defeat today if we come through without any sendings off or injuries. If we lose any key players today we will have no chance against either Oxford or Plymouth. Lets hope Argyle keep up their appalling disciplinary record and get one or two more sent off today. Our squad is really just too thin - roll on the transfer window.

And quite happy to be pro9ved wrong. Going to the Oxford and Plymouth games but chose to miss this one, not the best decision. Thats an absolute massive three points for us.

This was a fabulous and I must admit an unexpected win against an in-form Swindon team unbeaten for 15 games! Torquay deserved their 1-0 half-time win with some fine quality passing football and Swindon offered little. However the second half was a different story as Torquay were forced to defend the longer the game went on to such an extent it was all one-way traffic. Somehow we survived to claim all 3 points. Crowd 4,157 with over 1,00 from Swindon. Sponsors MOTM Mark Ellis who did his fair share of bravely shutting out Swindon. In fact Torquay's defensive qualities were outstanding and was the reason we won.
Torquay started outstandingly today and played some breathtaking football with great commitment. Mansell, who missed last week's defeat due to suspension, proved how vital he is with some great blocks. There was no wind today and the pitch was surprisingly solid so it suited our passing game. Torquay had an early chance that was blocked but we continued to threaten. It was curious to note that Swindon had several very tall players but they did not seriously threaten and did not make the most of some promising positions. On the touch-line DeCanio kept wandering around throwing his arms around a bit like a mad man in contrast to our own laid back Martin Ling who stood calmly. Torquay's breakthrough came on 34 minutes. O'Kane swung over a corner, Robertson won the header and Atieno volleyed it in from what I could see. It was no more than Torquay deserved and well done to Atieno who did a decent job filling Howe's role of main striker.
Swindon's players came out early to start the second half who must have got a half-time roasting from the mad Italian. Torquay did have a couple of good chances in the second half. Atieno from a tight angle brought out a decent save at the near post and an Ellis header from a corner was headed off the line. But Swindon turned the screw, used their substitutions, and had Torquay defending for their lives.Olejnik saved brilliantly, there were some great defensive blocks as Torquay came under severe pressure. Swindon won many corners and you felt it would be a matter of time before they equalized. Atieno tired and was replaced by McPhee and at the same time Rowe-Turner replaced Stevens on the left.
It was a case of just keeping possession and holding out. McPhee did not help the cause by trying some fancy football whilst in possession and beating himself! However Rowe-Turner kept possession well and played the ball into the oppostion corner in injury time winning corners. After 4 minutes of added time the final whistle blew. Torquay's players left to a great ovation. They had to dig deep against a club with much better resources without our leading scorer and won.
It was a great achievement and Martin Ling is achieving a minor miracle given our small squad.

A good gritty performance where we were the better team in the 1st 45 whilst Swindon probably edged it in the 2nd. Standout players for me were Lathrope and Mansell in the midfield snuffing out most Swindon attacks. Atieno pounced well for his goal and covered most of the Swindon half. Not suprised he looked a bit leggy by the 80th minute and thought Danny did well enough though he usually seemed to have two swindon players on him as soon as he got the ball. Bobby pulled off a few top notch stops in the 2nd half but wasnt overly troubled over the 90 which suprised me. Robbo the unsung hero in the back 4 once again. Would have been happy with 1 point before the game so 3 is excellent work...

I don't understand why our own supporters right us off so readily. Reverse psychology perhaps, understandable I do it myself on occaions as it can soften the blow of disapointment. No need to today though.. What I do know is that we have determinned and talented group of players that are doing us proud and have the ability to beat any team in this division on their day. Today was a typical example of that against a club with far superior rescources than our own and who entered the match on an unbeaten run of fifteen matches. Typically we produced a real gutsy and at times skillfull display to end that run and restart our own. This was truly wonderful Boxing day entertainmet, both sides going at it for the ninety minutes. Unusually we came out of the traps in top gear and pressed and harried them all first half and played some great football in that period which resulted in a deserved halftime 1-0 advantage. Every player played their part and believe me they needed to against a very strong and very talented Swindon team that moved the ball well had plenty of pace and did all they could to outplay us. We got our tactics spot on though where we pressed in every area of the pitch and passed the ball sublimely when given the oportunity. Attenio had a very good half topped off with a well taken goal that visibly liftted him and his recieving of the ball and laying off was as good as you will see at this level. The boy really does have something he just needs to add consistency. When half time came it was a question of whether we could keep our shape and continue where we had left off. It happened to a point. Swindon pressed and pressed as we gradualy got deeper and deeper with ther extra quality on the ball begining to have an affect. It was indeed Alamo like at times but the players, to their credit continued with the same phylosophy and hard work to eventually deny them any scraps of success. Olejnilk producing at least two outstanding saves, one to deny our former loanee Ronan Murray with an incredible stop. Ellis despite a couple of bloomers in the first half was imense and attacked everything and to his credit didnt let the errors affect him at all. The whole back line was incredible and believe me they had to be as Swindon have some very capable and tricky players that would have scored a hatfull againt lesser oposition. On the down side we didnt have a very strong bench, basically what we had at our disposal today was the bear minimum and if we are to mount any sort of meaningful challenge for the playoffs its imperitve that we bring in some new blood. Having said that Rowe Turner performed well in of place of Danny, he has a great physique and did the right things at the death when he won a succession of corners to see out time. Chris Mcphee will always have a tough time winning friends at Plainmoor, fans just domt forget his last stint here though he alwys gives it 100% ability wise he just doesn't seem to have enough to hurt defenders at this level. We now have to follow it up againt Oxford who also have high ambitions and a bigger fan base and a much improving Argyle two days later. Could be another interesting weekend so I dont think I will be writing us off just yet!

absolutely delighted with that result, and that atieno who still looks raw as a player proved me and a few others wrong in at least one game.We showed two sides of our game today,we were stylish and dangerous going forward in the first half, and defended excellently with a they shall not score attitude in the second, overall i think we just about deserved our win.Atieno worked his socks off up front, and was still giving it a go when it was apparent to all that he was out on his feet, total respect to him for that.In the end we held on a little bit but got our reward

Thought Ellis and Bobby were outstanding today in what was a great team performance. Not sure on Morris today but not to worry as Bodin returns for Oxford and Argyle. Di Canio screaming and ranting at his subs near the end was amusing, funnier was that several didn't feature and can't be blamed. Will he let us have Bodin? I'm not to sure as I think they missed a skilful player as they just lumped ball after ball long!! Great team effort and let's hope we can take this on to May .

Still buzzing after that result yesterday with some good quality football in the first half and a resolute defence in the second. Swindon were the highest placed team in the league we have won against so far this season - was that our best result? we have overturned a few negative sequences with first wins against Swindon since 1983, Plymouth since 1972 and at home against Barnet since 2000.
Nice to see us do it in front of our biggest crowd and maybe a few of the occasionals will return more regularly? I spoke to an old boy in the half time tea queue who was watching his first match for more than 15 years and he was more than impressed with the quality of the football on display. I had a few words with someone else I know at the end who again rarely comes but enjoyed his day out!
It hasn't been mentioned but I thought the ref did very well but whether the Swindon fans will agree is another matter!

Thought he missed a handball when Ellis jumped up - wouldn't have complained if that foul he made resulted in him being sent off. Can only assume the Swindon player was further right from goal and there for No Clear Opportunity.Nice to have the rub of the green for a change. Still it was a good 3 points.
