With a bumper crowd, the gulls will be looking to bounce back from our first reverse in the league for some time but it will be very difficult against a very well resourced Swindon side on a 15 match unbeaten run. In the last six games they have won four and drawn two, including good away wins against Colchester and Southend and in what would be considered a good away draw against Bristol Rovers by most in this division , Di Canio threw his toys out of his pram. They did win last time out at Morecambe 3-0 despite only having 39% of the possession.
Swindon's resources dwarf ours and of course they have seen fit to loan out Benyon and Bodin on long term loans. Other players with Torquay connections are Alan Connoll with four goals to his credit but not getting a look in at present and Ronan Murray, on loan from Ipswich and despite only getting onto the bench has scored in each of the last two games he has featured in. Foderingham, on loan from Crystal Palace has supplanted their number 1 keeper and has only let in 4 goals from eleven games with seven clean sheets. Liam Ridehalgh is on loan from Crystal Palace and has done well at left back. Finally Jake Jervis is on loan from Birmingham City and has scored five goals. I understand that a lot of these loans are due to expire but unfortunately not until after our match and hence is the reason that Di Canio is looking to get 3-5 players in this January which is why I am hopeful that we can retain Bodin in some capacity as I think it is unlikely that he will get much of a look in there this season.
Other players to watch out for are top scorer Mehdi Kerrouche with eight but dropped after the "Rovers debacle," attacking midfielder Matt Ritchie with seven goals and Raffaela De Vita with six, another player criticised after this match despite sharing the same nationality as his manager.
After reviewing Swindon's striking options and defensive prowess, it is quite depressing to think that two of our front three in Howe and Bodin will not be available for this one! I think it is a given that Morris will start on the right with Atieno up front and both will have something to prove being just outside of Ling's first choice starting XI. On the plus side, the midfield three of Lathrope, Mansell and O'Kane will be reunited for this and if at their best could have a decisive impact on the match. Saah could be back but probably on the bench which will be shorn of attacking options and I wouldn't be surprised to see LRT make an appearance on the left wing at some point.
Looking at their record, Swindon have the look of a side that will be promoted automatically although I will reserve judgment until I have actually seen them. This will be a tough one and could have a cup tie feel to it and to be honest I would be happy with a point and ecstatic to see our winning sequence at home extended to five games!
