Lyn had told me that one of her friends husband in Plymouth, once was a part of Torquay United but she could not remember when and just what he did.
On Sunday we were in Plymouth and she took me to meet him and boy was I so glad she did. Sometimes you meet someone who turns out to be the most interesting person to talk too and that sure was the case on Sunday.
The only sad thing was we had other matters to attend to in Plymouth and could only spend half and hour with him and so I intend to meet up with him again as he has so many interesting stories to tell.
I believe it was around 1976 he worked part time at our club as the youth team coach and Mike Bateson wanted him to take on the position full time. Pete at that time was a teacher and while the pay offer Bateson offered him was very generous, it was not enough for him to give up his teaching job.
As it turned out he made the right decision to say no to Mike Bateson as it was only a few seasons later that Bateson pulled the plug on our youth team setup. Pete talked about Kevin Hodges and what he told him when he learned he was going after the vacant job down the road.
He talked so fondly of his time at our club and clearly has a deep love for it and at 72 years old now, he still is giving so much of his time to football. He is someone who really does deserve to be called Mr Football and I can't wait to see him again as like I said he is a fascinating man to talk with.
Just before I left I took a few pictures using my camera phone of some things he had hanging on the wall in one room of his house, I'm sure there will be many things realted to our club he will be able to show me and if so I hope to put them up on this tread.
