Sunday 3rd June 2012I know the Royal family is not everyone’s cup of tea, but I have always loved the fact we do have one and think its great our queen is celebrating being on the throne for 60 years. I have only seen her once when I was a young boy living in Newton Abbot (not sure what year it was) and wonder if that was the one and only time she ever visited Newton Abbot. Lyn and I have been off work all this last week and have enjoyed many days out doing what I love doing best and that is walking. Poor lady is not used to walking but she does love it and I have worn her out this week for sure. She will be glad to get back to work for a holiday tomorrow lol. Really wanted to go out again today and was unsure where and what to do due to the fact it was very windy in Paignton this morning and also there were the odd light showers of rain. I did fancy taking Lyn to Sidmouth as it’s full of those very interesting shops you do not find on most high streets these days. As we drove off that is where I was going to head for and then we had a shower of rain and so I said we would be better of going to Kent’s Cavern and then to the Coach House in Babbacombe for a meal. But once again I changed my mind and decided to risk the weather in Sidmouth and boy were we both so glad that is where we went and spent the afternoon. Those of you who know Sidmouth will know once you get near the bottom of the main street it spits into two streets. The one on the right is now only for pedestrians and when we walked down it tables were being unloaded from a van and laid out end to end down the street. We went into a café for a meal and soon learned there was a Jubilee street party taking place from 4pm and there were 190 tables being used in total. In fact three streets were used for the party and as it was only around 2pm after we finished eating, we went for a walk along the seafront etc. When we returned just after 4pm to the streets were the party was being held we could not believe our eyes. When we left they were empty apart from a few people walking around and those men putting up all the tables. Now the place was packed and the tables all full of some wonderful and some not so wonderful looking food. Live music was playing and while we were only onlookers so to speak, it still was a wonderful feeling still by just being there and in our own way being a part of it all. It seemed a bit sad when we got back to Paignton and drove through the streets as there was nothing going on at all. I’m not sure if any events are planned here in Torbay tomorrow, but I think even if there is, it will have to be something special to beat today’s street party in Sidmouth. If you take any photos of any street parties etc would love if you could share them with us on the TFF.

One of the good things about living in a city the size of London is that an event like this can happen without you even knowing. Today's events took place less than 4 miles away, but it might have been 400 miles away for all the impact it had. I spent the day mooching around, generally avoiding anything to do with river flotillas, street parties, cold sausage rolls and elderly women waving at people standing in the rain. And by the looks of the expressions in your photos Dave, quite a few of the people in Sidmouth today wished they'd done the same!

Was looking forward to this street party but not now! I ain`t sitting in the street in the rain with a bunch of soggy people eating soggy sausage rolls, typical weather, everytime anyone tries to do anything it decides to laugh in their faces, well I stick two fingures up to the rain and am going to carry on indoors! Long live the Queen!

I know the Royal family is not everyone’s cup of tea Speaking as a British tax payer, I'm more than happy that 69p of my tax every year, goes to the Royal Family. I would rather my money go to them than the people who do live off the backs of those who do chose to go to work and earn an honest living. I'm sick to death of those who do as little as possible so they can claim all the benefits going. I'm sick to death of those who claim they can't work due to back problems and ride around in brand new cars paid for by the likes of me who do work and pay my taxes. You watch them when they decide to do a tip run to dispose of unwanted household items, they load up the car and you never see any evidence they have any so called back problem. Look at all those fiddling everything to get as much as they can for nothing, there are times I wonder if they are just smarter than me and I'm and others like me, really are the foolish ones. I won't go on about all those who come to live in our country and get everything given to them on a plate, the problem is those already here and who have lived an honest live, get sod all and all that needs changing.

Long live the Queen! Never mind mate, we all know we can never depend on the weather here in the UK. it has been so good to see so many people celebrating the Queens Jubilee and its been so good to see the flag of our country on display everywhere. I had hoped to go out today myself to a few more events but do fear this rain will put a big dampener on everything today. I went over to Torquay yesterday as Palm FM were holding a road show with live music they stated would start at 6pm. How daft to set up right next to the fairground as every single ride has loud music blaring out. 6pm came and just some music being pumped through the speakers and then at 6.35pm two foolish clowns came on the stage and said the live music was starting at 7.30pm. Bucks Fizz ( was it really them anyway?) would be coming on at 9.15pm. Well after getting there at 5.35pm expecting a big gathering and it being on the cold side, we decided to head back home and watch the TV instead.

Look at the people in those photographs, Dave. They look like fu**ing corpses.
But how do you know that they’re not on benefits? Did you ask them? Do you know anything about them?
Instead of sitting in your van all day with the Jeremy Vine show on, watching that chip on your shoulder grow larger by the day, why not listen to some music, listen to some audio books, learn a foreign language? You might learn something and find life more interesting.

You might learn something and find life more interesting. I would agree looking at the pictures you might think that no one looks like they are enjoying themselves. But that was not how it seemed being there in person as there was a real party atmosphere. I would say most looked like they were all well of people and the food on many of the tables sure gave that impression. I do not have a chip on my shoulder as far as I'm concerned and my views I know are ones held by many people living in this country who work hard to make ends meet. I have as far as I'm concerned a very interesting life that I enjoy to the full and spend a great deal of it out doors discovering new things. It was not I who was sat indoors on Sunday not wishing to join in with and take part in what most of the rest of the people in this country were doing. Yes I have strong views on those who want to live off the backs of others and am not afraid to air them. There are many decent people who find themselves on benefits through no fault of their own, but there are also many who would not take a job if it was offered to them. I happen to love the J.Vine show, I love debate and find listening to others views very interesting and I do so often learn a great deal during the two hours it is on the radio.

Gawd Bless You Ma'am Thanks to Dave for bringing us a flavour of the wonderful scenes & old style community spirit from Sidmouth. A town well known for giving Reds short shrift & where many newsagents often don't even bother stocking The Guardian as there is such little demand. Those familiar with the town will know that many of the residents are indeed claiming state benefit in the form of the old age pension. Having worked hard & saved I certainly don't begrudge them a few years by the sea. It's not only Dave & many of the citizens of Sidmouth (some who will have fought in the last world war) who begrudge Baroness Warsi being given more taxpayers money each day in 'expenses' than many of these old soldiers receive in a week. I was a little farther along the coast in Seaton on Saturday (2nd) & the celebrations had yet to get into full swing. So my rather poor contribution of a couple of small flags in a window is the best I could manage

Like most of Sidmouth, Joe, I'd be reading a (stolen) copy of the Daily Telegraph...a far more entertaining read than the Guardian (which despite its occasional bluster, reputation, and articles on making hummus, is as conservative and conventional in its politics as any other British newspaper). I don't care for its Stalinist politics, but I would like to smuggle a couple of these into the libraries and rest homes of Sidmouth:

Don't assume that just because I wasn't cooing at a 'street party' on Sunday that I was sat at home. Like millions of other people I found something else to do. You say you don't like people making money on your back (what do you think your employer does btw?). But you don't say anything about the bankers who received BILLIONS of your and my taxes. You don't saying anything about the construction firms given our money to build the Olympic venues whilst cutting their worker's terms and conditions. You don't say anything about successive governments who have created a system which imports cheap foreign labour and undercuts workers here. You don't say anything about the 'financial innovators' responsible for 'offshoring' British jobs to cheap and docile labour markets in China. Instead you lay into other working class people and stick your tongue up the backside of one of the richest families in the country. Why?

I've managed to take the kids to three street parties in different communities over the last few days and very enjoyable occasions they were too with (in addition to lots of food and drink ) punch and judy show, magic show, best prince/princess competition, egg & spoon race, a couple of bands and various giant inflatable bouncing things.
