I am the Watford FC historian and have a query concerning a Torquay United player of the 1930s, Edgar Hewitt. I believe him to have been a brother of the Watford goalkeeper who was known as 'Joe' Hewitt, and whose full name has always been stated in football archives and reports to have been Joseph Thomas Hewitt. However, the 1911 census reveals a Hewitt family at 39 Bulkington Road, Bedworth, Warwickshire, in which John, a miner, and Annie have seven children, including Edgar (aged 3) - and I'm fairly confident that this is the Torquay footballer - but no Joseph. One of the siblings, though, is John, aged 7, who I think must be the Watford goalkeeper known (mysteriously) as Joseph Thomas. I would welcome comment on this conundrum from anyone who has any relevant information.

They are rare beasts and a little timid at times. Look back tomorrow and perhaps they will appear from the dark shadows when no one is looking or when we are all sleeping

Look back tomorrow and perhaps they will appear from the dark shadows when no one is looking or when we are all sleeping There's been a history boys-cum-prog rockers get together tonight (with one of our trio coming into both interest groups). Sadly my books are packed away at the moment so I'll cede to the Chief Historian who may be along shortly. But just don't mention ginger piddle in his company..... Ginger Piddle? Not another of those ever-so-progressive rock bands, surely?

the Chief Historian who may be along shortly. But just don't mention ginger piddle in his company..... Shortly....... Do you know how long the bleeding no 32 takes to cover the distance that the number 12 does in 10 minutes? Longer than a bloody Rick Wakeman keyboard solo. I've been through parts of Chelston I didn't know existed and more amazingly for a boy Shiphay-born and Shiphay-bred I've been through parts of Shiphay that I didn't know existed. As for "Leg Warmer" from the Piddle Brewery in Dorset........ In a third of a century of consuming ales of varying quality, never have I come across one so unpleasant that I have been unable to force it down my neck .... until tonight. A pint of beer with a hint of ginger could be interesting. A pint of ginger with a hint (a very faint hint) of beer would defeat the most determined alcoholic. If Mick Hucknall and Billy Bremner had a love child, it wouldn't be as ginger as Piddle's Leg Warmer. What was the question again? Hewitt. All I can tell you is that Edgar Donald (known as Don) Hewitt signed for us in May 1930 from Coventry City and was 22 years old at the time he signed. Hope this helps.

I presume the bus goes around the Chelston country estate? It didn't when I were a lad, but since then a new land-owner has arrived and blocked off the old rights-of-way...

I presume the bus goes around the Chelston country estate? A top value three-for-the-price-of-one bus route: the proper 32, the old 28A and Strand-St Marychurch all rolled into one. Very convenient for Chelstongull and quite proper to give him company on the way home. Hope there wasn't too much of a whiff of ginger onboard?
