With only a fortnight until our first league match and 10 days to the first competitive match the players need to step things up and a match against premiership opposition playing in a direct style should do nicely! Our defence should be severely tested and we should get an insight into how the Saah.Downs axis will perform under pressure. I suspect Ling will play something near to our best XI with a holding midfielder trying to give that added protection which could give some more insight as to how we will start the season. Of course, this is a significant chapter in the history of our club with the formal opening of Bristow's Bench and I will say a little prayer to the man whose actions turned our fortunes around and legacy is there for all to see.

Just realised that it has been p1ssing down most of the night and it will continue until approximately 10pm with the Met giving an Amber warning for floods, tommorow morning we are in for thundery showers with the odd dry patch and then clearing up late in the day. My question is `Has a pre-season friendly ( in the middle of SUMMER ) ever been cancelled due to a water-logged pitch?`. Remembering that the ground is absolutely saturated from all the rain we have had over the last three months, all bar a week when we were visited by an unidentified yellow sphere in the sky!

I don't know about tomorrow morning for thundery showers! This morning, just after I took my dog out for a walk towards this ominous black cloud, (no, it wasn't the meerkat! ;D) saw some forked lightening hit the ground just over the brow of the hill, which along with the thunder, put my dogs tail between his legs and was promptly pulled back home. You make a good point about the pitch Aussie, which has struggled with the weather that we have been having.... Hope it doesn't affect our passing game this season.

Looks like the weathermans got it wrong AGAIN! Not sure about that Aus, the forecast we used on our day trip to Brixham I thought was spot in. Cloudy day with light rain showers between 1300 and 1500 which we did. Well, it was only one light shower in all fairness but it did save us a trip to Scum Central.

Very entertaining game with a cracking goal by Bodin to make it 1 - 1 and the Stoke 'keeper pulling off a great save to deny Torquay the winner.
The more I see of Thompson the more I think we have the extra pace and game changer from the bench. Macklin had another good game and offers pace to burn from the bench.
Back up CB to tie up and we are up and running.

A great result and performance with many positives right through the side with strength in depth meaning that our best spell in the last quarter was from the younger players.
Typical Bodin goal cutting in from the left to rifle it into the corner. Thought he looked a class act tonight. Once he got into the match, Macklin continued his pre season form and this should give him confidence. Downes looks very good and is establishing a formidable partnership with Saah. Never seen Howe move so quick or freely. Danny caused problems. Nice cameo from Thompson and Yeoman almost scored right at the end.
Stoke are a very strong side with some big units in there. Cruise took a knock to the face and needed extensive treatment before being subbed. If they took their chances would have won with a great save by poke and a disallowed goal keeping us in it during the early part of the second half. Their scorer was their best player, worked hard down the left wing and very quick to close Oastler down.

You may not have heard the full story then. I couldn't give the winner his money on the pitch because it would've been far, far too embarrassing!

Just noticed that the "Sebastian" that played for Stoke at left-back was Polish international Sebastian Boenisch, who's on trial with them at the moment. Seemed quite handy
Actually I didn't think much of the game. I enjoyed seeing some talented players in action, particularly the likes of Crouch who surprised me by not being another Heskey. Credit to Stoke for bringing their strongest side down. But it's fair to say neither side looked all that great. Stoke dominated but didn't take their chances. We got a bit lucky at the end, by which time Stoke were playing a makeshift back 4, including a centre-midfielder at left-back and a right-back at centre-back. So I don't know how much you can read into our resurgence
