Go the Scottish border beyond Carlisle, fork left and – in football terms – you’re probably thinking about Queen of the South. It’s a bit more complex than that, because back in the 1920s, Solway Star – based in Annan – had a few seasons in the Scottish League. Also, between 1923 and 1926, Mid-Annandale from Lockerbie turned out at the same level. The area now has a current Scottish League club and one recently departed. ANNAN ATHLETICAnnan joined the Scottish League in 2008 and play at Galabank. It’s a pretty functional place but the club have done well to bring it up to standard. We saw the Ramsdens Cup game against Livingstone – which Annan won 1-0 – the first game to be played on the new artificial surface. For reasons, which would take too long to explain, this was my second visit to Galabank on the final Saturday in July in three seasons. GRETNA After playing in English leagues, Gretna had a frantic dalliance in the Scottish League between 2002 and 2008 which featured a Scottish Cup final appearance (I was there!). The club has been reformed along trust lines and now plays in the East of Scotland League back at Raydale Park. We peered over the wall on our way back from Annan. The stand at the far end is something of a whopper given the scale of the ground.
