Nice one, Keyberry! Look at Richard Rundle's excellent Football Club History Database - www.fchd.info/ - and you'll see details of that FA Vase run: PRE PORT OF BRISTOL A 5-1 1 BACKWELL UNITED H 2-0 2 NEWBURY TOWN A 6-5 3 NEWPORT I O W H 4-2 4 BRISTOL MANOR FARM A 2-1 5 HUCKNALL COLLIERY WELFARE A 4-2 QF SUDBURY TOWN H 1-0 SF(1) FLEETWOOD TOWN H 3-2 SF(2) FLEETWOOD TOWN A 0-2 Also you'll see just how well Exmouth did in the Western League during the 1980s: 1983-84 WEST-P 38 21 11 6 59-35 53 1/20 1984-85 WEST-P 42 22 8 12 83-51 52 4/22 1985-86 WEST-P 42 30 9 3 95-31 69 1/22 1986-87 WEST-P 42 22 10 10 82-62 54 2/22 1987-88 WEST-P 42 19 10 13 61-55 48 6/22 1988-89 WEST-P 40 29 4 7 79-43 62 2/21 1989-90 WEST-P 40 24 5 11 74-37 77 5/21 I was living in Lancashire for most of that time but, by the end of that period, I was rooting for Taunton Town who won the Western League in 1990. That proved to be Exmouth's last decent season. That season Exmouth reached the fourth qualifying round of the FA Cup for the second season on the trot. Those runs ended at the hands of Woking and Farnborough. I saw the 1989/90 win over Weymouth:

So what happened to cause the decline of Exmouth Town? And has there ever been a more evocative trio of match officials than Stump, Harding & Truckle?

I've no idea what happened to Exmouth. I guess it's either the usual things about the money running out or losing a special group of players en masse.
Afterwards they didn't do much in the Western League until an injection of cash won them promotion a few years back. Then they crashed, pulled out of the Western and converted the reserves into the first team playing in the Devon and Exeter. From then it didn't take long to get into the lower tier of the Penunsula where they've stayed.
I've said before that I think the Penunsula is an excellent well-run league. I really enjoyed following it in its first five seasons. But, without this being a reflection on the league itself, several teams have fallen by the wayside. This year Penzance - a fine old club - are in desperate straights and appear to be fielding teams of similar strength to when Ricardo and his mates helped Clyst in their hour of need all those years ago.

I saw the 1989/90 win over Weymouth: Some familiar names there! Apart from Compton, Smith and Pugh there is Ian Johnson - the man we signed for a bag of balls from Whitley Bay!

Ottery, Clyst, Dawlish, Torrington, Heavitree , and maybe more? Devon teams who once plied their trade in the western league. Where are they now! I'm sure if the likes of: the more recently formed clubs - Buckland and Plymouth Parkway, the handful of Devon clubs still competing at level 5 and the big guns of Cornwall - could find another half a dozen teams to join forces, a Devon/Cornwall level 5 league would be achievable. I hope this is the aim of the SWPL. Unfortunately too many clubs gamble their existence on short term gain. If the money wasted on players was invested wisely, this could happen sooner rather than later. Ask Stefano

Great programme. I recall Steve Hynds being part of the fantastic Tiverton side along with Kevin Smith, Hedley Steele and the Saunders brothers. I also recall goalkeeper Mike Barrett being plucked from Crediton United to star for Exeter in the 2-1 defeat to their superior rivals from down the A380 - happy days!
