The programme for Bert Head’s benefit match played on the 26th April, 1947 against Belgium side R.F.C. Malinois, better known by their current name KV Mechelen.
They had been champions of Belgium in 1945/46, and as the Belgium league season had yet to finish due to a late start were therefore still the current holders, and would be again in the 1947/48 season.
They have since won the European Cup Winners Cup in 1987/88 and the European Super Cup in 1988.
Torquay United lost the game 3-1 with Conley getting the single goal.
And how unfortunate for the Belgium team to be accompanied by their masseur, Frans De Cock...
