It's been said many times, that if you want to even have a tilt at promotion, these are the sort of games you have to win! Windswept Tuesday evening in the back of beyond in front of a pitiful home crowd of 11! Although the Solihull crowd has been increased by one lately, after Bill the Blacksmith and his sister Glastonbury (where she was conceived) have proudly welcomed their new baby into the world! After much thought and deliberation they have decided to call him/her In The Outside Toilet! I notice a post from Timbo saying that Read had a chance to open the scoring early! A simple thing like that can change a game completely...and my bank balance!

Just seen the highlights on the National League website:
Goal 1 - Thought the 'keeper could/should have saved it. Goal 2 - Soft penalty call, but looked like contact made, well dispatched. Goal 3 - Couldn't defend and see goal 1
Torquay penalty - sh*te.

No excuses for this performance but looking at the highlights their pen was a con job without doubt and the female ref fell for it. Their player just barged into Opi and he fell over like he'd been shot. The first goal they shouldn't be scoring from that range. A tame challenge from Little and nobody closing the player down and MacDonald maybe should have done a little better and exactly the same issues for the third goal. Far to much space and time. Little pen miss was a very good save by te keeper who happened to guess the right way. Big inquest today no doubt but we looked lathargic and some of the body language was poor. Where did last seasons intensity fight go last night? Its how they respond on Saturday that counts now. GJ will not want to see a repeat of that type of performance.

The fact is last season we were playing part time teams who let us play our game and conspired in making it easy for us. This season we are playing full time teams who are not going to roll over so we can tickle their tummies. I know Gary Johnson knows the score but I wonder if any of our players have really got the ability to step up a level, remember none of these players are proven at this level.

Just seen a tweet where apparently we have put out the youngest side by three years in this division so far with an average age of just 21.5 years! Certainly the physicality in this division necessitates a steep learning curve. However, early days yet and the side need to learn how to deal with this. Always easy to over react after one game and it could be the case that this side gets better over the season as the players toughen up,

Always easy to over react after one game and it could be the case that this side gets better over the season as the players toughen up, A good point Rob many of us fail to remember when we get a poor performance like we did on Tuesday. Its balancing act for the manager. Sure its good to have experience running through a side but that comes with a proneness to injury as we've witnessed with Ryan Dickson who has struggled to stay fit since his arrival. Patience and little bit of tolerance has to be the word with young players and Garry Johnson will know that from experience. Looking back I can clearly remember the likes Darren Moore, Paul Trollop etc who looked weak and poor at the start of their careers but went on to play at the highest level. Already on another forum I read pointless criticism of Jake Andrews. I'm sure he has the sense not to read it and if he did would have a strong enough character and belief in his own ability to ride it out but for sure it has and will affect some player. We have a great core of young hungry players with the potential to improve and earn money for the club who are still learning the game. Surely better than injury prone has beens?

Always easy to over react after one game and it could be the case that this side gets better over the season as the players toughen up, I think the supporters who booed the team on Tuesday need to take that into account. A young team needs support not brick bats. I can never understand exactly why some supporters have quite frankly unrealistic expectations of Torquay sides down the years, I would imagine in my 40 plus years of watching the team we have lost more games than we won. We've always been a small club with limited resources and the glory years are certainly outnumbered by the mediocre and disastrous ones, so why does anyone expect different.
