I spent some time today watching 'The Big Match Revisited' on ITV4 (available via the ITV iplayer also) and it featured the Third Division game played on 25th February 1979 between Brentford and Watford. A few well known names featured such as Luther Blissett, nice to know he got to sample the delights of Griffin Park before heading off to the San Siro. In the Brentford side are Len Bond, Jim McNichol & Pat Kruse. Now although I've only been watching Torquay regularly for the past 4 or 5 seasons I am a little familiar with some of the old names. When I checked on Pat Kruse I was interested to read that.. and it got me wondering whether any of the Forum users were present at Plainmoor to witness that 'world record' or were you too busy arguing with a Steward about your bottle top & missed it ?

Remember it all too well. Had left the old social club with the late George Slater and we took our seatas in the stand just as the whistle blew. From my memory of the event I'd have to ask what the heck Terry Lee was doing! If memory serves we3 scored 2 own goals in that game, the second from Phil Sandercock - but no doubt Jon or someone else with a beter memory can put me right on that.

You're absolutely right, the 2nd own goal coming almost as near to half-time as the first was to Kick Off.
Just as well we had Willie Brown to knock in 2 in the second half - all 4 goals in front of the mini-stand (in which I was standing).
Memories ....

From my memory of the event I'd have to ask what the heck Terry Lee was doing! Ttttterry had a tttttttterrible sssstutter, so giving a decisive instruction to Kruse (or "Bucket" as he was known) so early in the game was a disaster waiting to happen. A Stepney born Eastender, Terry Lee was a lovely guy but a bit too "Bohemian" for the management. I remember once he turned up for an away trip to Weymouth for a pre-season friendly only to get sent home to change as he was dressed in loons, sandals and cravat! A talented chef, he tragically suffered an early death in his thirties from a heart attack.

I was at that game too and one of the few times I stood down the Babbacombe end. Quite amazing really when the goal went in, everyone looked around as to see if it was a wind up but it certainly wasnt. When the second own goal went in we thought we had had it. Luckily for us we moved around to the popside and saw the great willie brown get us a draw.
Went home and was asked the score and said "great game, we scored four today" with a big grin on my face and walked off.

...Yep - I also was present and correct for this one (along with my bruv) - I believe my learned friend Dutchgull was also there - we used to stand in those days near the halfway line by the dugouts - I can smell the linament again now - am just playing the Abanda theme to add to the sense of occasion - yep THAT Herb Alpert one - anyone want it sending on just pm me with ya addy.....I believe Merse has it already!!......
........other abiding memory of the day was Phil Sandercocks incredibly huge Afro hairstyle!!...
........aah, Willie Brown - proud possessor of the gringo moustache of the season!!.......
....the 2nd (Phil Sandercock) og was also extraordinary, a bizarre diving header from Phil - I can picture it now - in those days we turned out in the white kit with the yellow and blue stripe down one side I think!! - (rambling now!!!)......aah I can see it now - the huge sideys, Dave Kennedys pot belly, Steve Morralls massive nose, the late Malcolm Musgrove in his sheepskin coat, linesmen with a pencil down one sock, Merse with hair even!!! - in those far-off halycon days people brought ale into the ground to drink no problem - I recall one character in the "paddock" regularly brought in tinnys of Colt 45!!.........

Yes I was there aswell, in the mini stand.
I think it took just 3 touches to hit the back of the net.
kick off, angled pass back to kruse 18 yds out on the right of the box he angled a pass back to Terry Lee who had moved to his right only to watch as the ball trickled into the middle of the goal.
Tragic end to poor old Terry on the square at Barton Downs.
Happy days in the mini despite what we often had to watch, can still smell the players no.6 wafting through the stand.

I was down the front of the popside banging the advertising boards. i used to love being that close to the game but modern do-gooders have spoiled all the fun.
I remember that it was a header. Cambridge kicked off and passed back to their centre back who lumped it forward. Kruse headed it back to Lee who had already come out to collect it. Lee was unable to get back to stop the ball rolling in the net.
It i amazing how things get changed over the years. a mate of mine and his brother and father are convinced that Lee was bending down in the goal putting his hat in the net. Absolute tosh but you can't convince them. thank goodeness for you tube these days!

I have definitely always remembered it as a header too. Impressive to see that the only contenders for world's fastest ever own goal in that Guardian article are both ex-Torquay players Having seen that Kruse goal, I think I have bagged a rare pair in that I also witnessed what I believe to be the fastest goal ever scored against England PS You know the one - that Stuart Pearce left for his goalkeeper ...

This reminds me of a Hereford own goal at Plainmoor when their player had been kicked the ball, he was stood in centre circle, thought the ref had blown the whistle to return it to his keeper and lobbed his own keeper from the halfway. At least thats how I remember it?

Wasn't that John Crabbe who scored that goal? Not actually sure if it was before or after he had played for us.
