Oh, and by the way, it's not about the Woods, Ellis combination is it?? Is that why Carlisle and Benyon have fell out??

I like Woods and I like that he distributes the ball out from the back often rather than just smashing it back to the other team. On the whole last night was good performance wise and if anyone should be slated it should be Carayol who did very little and kept giving the ball away. Defensivley we now look more solid and the midfield has more of a presence, though, I would still be suprised if we got into the top 5 this season because confidence is low and certain players are unhappy. Ive stated before that Hodges was a pointless signing when we have Nicho and clearly we need 1 right back rather than 2 left backs. In terms of an end product going forward Nicho is simply a much better option than Hodges who was good defensivley last night but does'nt offer much else and is lazy getting back when he does venture forward. I really hope the rumours of his imminent departure are not true and I also hope that Stevens does'nt sign for Crawley. Brough can go if he wants though. ;D ( ok - a bit harsh) It's all about opinions. Woods distribute from the back rather than smashing it don't make me laugh. As for Nicholson / Hodges - Hodges is a better player than Nicholson ever was or ever will be. Nicholson started last season well and deteriorated as the season progressed. It is all about opions but where is your evidence that Hodges is a better option than Nicho at left back - I gave my reasons. I think some people rely to much on reputations and can ignore the players who are actually vital to the team. I can admit that Nicholson is abit limited, for instance, he cannot use his right foot but, at this level of football, you will struggle to find many players that are not limited in certain areas. My main point really is that Nicholson was voted by us as our third best player last season and yet we have replaced him and not sorted out the right back position that actually needed attention. Im only going to judge Hodges on what I am seeing while he is playing for us, not his previous reputation. He is better defensivley than Nicho but there is no penetration from him going forward and when he does make his way up he is slow and lazy getting back. I think that we were all guilty of over elaborating on our new signings abilities at the start of the season based upon little previous knowledge and certain reputations. For instance, at the start of the season people were listing their favourite XIs on here and leaving Hargreaves out with a bunch of people they had rarely seen ahead of him, that for me is unbelievable. I'll admit that I was guilty of thinking that some players were better than they actually are. Now though I realise that we have strengthened in NO areas. The only signing that has really impressed me so far is Carlisle, who actually has a little ability, though I would still swap him for Zebs any day. Of course it is not Buckle's fault that Zebs left but he let Phillips go and signed replacements in the wrong areas that have not worked so far. and yes............ I dont know what you've been watching but Woods regularly brings the ball down and plays a pass when he has the space to do so. Of course, sometimes, you have to smash it away when the pressure is on but when he has abit of space and time he, generally, uses it. Woods is a good defender who has served this club well and he is certainly a better centre back than Robertson and Brough and, although Ellis has potential to be a regular first team player, woods is currently still a better option than him. Here is my team for the next game based on what we have now seen. Poke Rb - someone new before the deadline CB's - Woods and Todd Lb - Nicho RW - Stevens (I feel he will have more success beating people on his natural right side, while Carlisle usually makes off the ball runs and delivers early meaning he should be able to play on either side.) CM'S - Hargreaves and Mansell LW - Carlisle CF - Sills CF - I really cannot choose another though I know who I would like there (Phillips)

Interesting idea putting Carlisle LW and Stevens RW. Have we tried swapping wingers around in a match yet ? That did work pretty well last season when wingers swapped around a few times in one game. It certainly makes us less predictable and will ask more questions of the opposition. As for Carayol, I think both him and Carlisle show some good glimpses but both can be wasteful as well. I don't think think we have an obvious selection for our wingers, so I would favour moving them around more trying different wings.

1- I like Woods and I like that he distributes the ball out from the back often rather than just smashing it back to the other team. On the whole last night was good performance wise *************************************************** 2- In terms of an end product going forward Nicho is simply a much better option than Hodges who was good defensively last night but doesn't offer much else and is lazy getting back when he does venture forward. 1- It's all about opinions. Woods distribute from the back rather than smashing it don't make me laugh. 2- As for Nicholson / Hodges - Hodges is a better player than Nicholson ever was or ever will be. Nicholson started last season well and deteriorated as the season progressed. I think something of relevance are the ages of the players highlighted. To take Woods first, I too am of the "andygulls' camp" (not unnaturally, some might say!) he's now 32 and making the same errors in his preponderance for getting pulled out of position that he always has. The goal we conceded at home to York was yet another example and (as I said on Thursday) his indiscipline was commented on more than once by Paul Parker on Setanta. His distribution WAS better the other night, but generally over the years has been pretty poor in my opinion. As for Hodges remember he is 35 now and playing at left back where any lack of pace can be far more exposed than at left centre back or midfield; he HAS to be selective when he gets forward AND ensure he is covered adequately if he does. Having done that he needs to be allowed time to get back without blowing a gasket. That is NOT laziness, it is common sense! This has always been a weakness in Nicholson's game too although he is not 28 until October.................such lack of pace that ended his Football League days in his early twenties in my opinion. I would agree with Andygulls that Nicholson's effectiveness deteriorated through last season and in my opinion that was through opponents "sussing" his game and role for us and the inherent weaknesses that underlined. So in summing up, Woods at 32 will never improve and always be susceptible to the sucker punch. Hodges at 35 is "pace challenged"to be playing at left back but offers a more dependable defensive presence (the priority requirement of any defender) than Nicholson at 28 who's pin point assists became more and more restricted to re-starts last season as opponents recognised they could restrict his movement forward in open play by pressing up on his left back position. I would guess that once Todd regains fitness,Woods will once again give way to him and as long as Hodges is not required either in midfield or central defence (where he might be preferred to Ellis) he will continue to keep Nicholson out of the left back berth.
