Weymouth V Torquay United 26th December 2008

Definately a result that was ground out today, but an important one.

Glorious drive over with my son - eating our sandwiches overlooking Chesil Beach before a swift pre-match pint at the Lugger Inn 5 mins drive from the ground. Warm enough in the sun but pretty chilly on the terrace behind the goal!

Nervous start with Bevan making a couple of good saves with their player looking suspiciously off-side on both occasions. From there on we started to get on top but I didn't think we looked very convincing for any prolonged spell.

So pleased that Green scored as he has 'needed' a goal for some time, even if today's appeared to take a big deflection leaving the keeper wrongfooted (didn't have a clear view of this so hope I am right).

Generally the game was scrappy with the ball in the air far too much and disappointing wing play. Some of the referee's decisons were so bad that they were laugh-out-loud comical - for and against both sides.

Bevan must be signed (I didn't see him at Eastbourne but can't recall any costly mistakes in the games I have seen), Woods & Hodges looked assured and Sills never stopped chasing.

Gulls in good voice throughout and happy to take 3 points - just hope Burton's poor spell is still to come. Starting on 6th Jan perhaps!

According to Dave Thomas this afternoon - the deal to sign Bevan is all done bar putting pen to paper, he expects him to be signed on or before the Kiddi game.

There will always be games that you go and watch and the only thing you will remember the game for, is the fact that the team got the three points. For me todays game was such a game, one I had not planned to go to, but due to a change in what was planned, I had Ant telling me I had just 15 Min's to get out of my dressing gown, get a shower and run up the road to meet our lift to Weymouth.

As I only had a short time to get ready and the fact that I now was able to go, I got all excited about going to the game, so much so I did not give the weather any thought at all. The result was that I did not have warm enough clothes on and bloody froze all afternoon.

Having not gone to any away games for some time, I remembered soon enough why I never stand behind the goal to watch any match. Trying to see what is going on up the other end is near impossible, the only plus was to watch Bevan up close and see the game as he would see it.

If it was not for Bevan, we would have lost todays game by at least three goals, he was the only player who stood out for the team today, the rest must have had too much turkey yesterday.Bevan was soon called into action and make a great saving tackle with his legs and soon afterward, was diving to his left to palm the ball past the post.

Carayol had the worst game I have ever seem him play, he could not beat any Weymouth player and lost the ball so many times, he should have been taken off much sooner than he was. Sills worked hard, but was not winning the headers that he has been in more recent games.

Weymouth were playing the much better football and used their wingers to such good effect. They passed much better than we did and were able to play the ball out to their wingers, who seemed to have all the space in the world to receive the ball.

Our goal was a lucky goal, a shot by Green that maybe was on target, but seemed to be covered by the Weymouth keeper, only for the ball to take a big defection and sail in into the middle of the goal, with the keeper already diving to his right.

I can't think of any more real chances for us in the first half, it was a poor display by our team, but we were winning the game by the only goal. Second half did not improve much at all, we hit long hopeful balls and still kept being done by the Weymouth wingers.

Weymouth did push up more as the second half went on and this gave Green more room to run in behind the Weymouth defense. If only he would shoot when he really needed to, rather than waiting that second too long, then he could have scored maybe two goals himself today. You could see clearly from behind the goal, when he needed to pull the trigger, but his delay often ended up with a tackle coming in.

The only other point to write about, was a great volley by Hodges, he hit it so sweet and with such power, but it somehow got headed up and over the crossbar by a Weymouth defender.

A good number of our fans in the ground, who sang well and make plenty of noise, just a shame that the same bunch from our own popside, who now like to sing that the ref is a c*** had to treat us to it again today.

We did enough today with Bevan in fantastic form and thats about it.

I agree with Dave about the support re: that song, it sounds stupid and the people who sing it should think of something more imaginative (heads together now!).

Also that bloody drum absolute waste of time. I personally HATE the thing. Why drown out your own supporters with incessant banging (usually completely out of rhythm). If it was used less frequently then it may be tolerable.

Torquay till i die

Its quite sad really that we need to be having a conversation about this matter. The people who sing that song must realise (hopefully) that they sound like absolute idiots. I shout and swear at football but would never use that word. It makes our supporters look like pondlife.

maybe we could get or "superb" drummer to drown the song out like he/she!? did for every other song! ho ho ho!!
