The reference to Andrew or Jasper McLuckie is interesting. I am fairly sure that there in no Andrew who played league football in Scotland but Jasper looks more promising. I am not absolutely sure but his name might actually be James. Jasper did play one game for a Scotland XI. He played for the Anglo-Scots versus the Home Scots on 20 March 1901 to help select the team to play England. These trials were quite big games at the time - a crowd of 10,000 watched this one. He was not selected. Michael Joyce has him down as Jasper. One hell of a scoring record for Aston Villa after leaving Bury: www.astonvillaplayerdatabase.com/868.htmlHe was only 26 when he signed for Argyle (in Argyle's second season as a pro club) and you could imagine his signing causing a bit of a stir in Devon.

Robba played a half for Gibraltar (not Malta as someone keeps telling us!) against Portugal.
Talking of Malta, the first Malta-born Torquay player was over a century ago - nearly fifty years before Malta played its first international match!

OK What about this one. Didn't Percy Varcoe play for England. I believe he played for Torquay, pre-league and then went to other clubs amongst whom was Norwich. His family had a shop in Fowey which was converted into flats and they are known as Varcoes Corner. Varco didn't play for England. His TUFC career was very brief - less than two months! He scored a hat-trick for the reserves against RMLI on 3/11/23 and was pitched straight into the first team at Newport the following week - scoring twice. His last game for us was on 15/12/23 when he scored a hat-trick at home to Bristol Rovers which led to him being snapped up by Aston Villa a few days later. Total record : Southern League 5 games 6 goals FA Cup 2 games (both v Aberdare!) 0 goals Plymouth & District League 1 game 3 goals In addition to a successful career in professional football, I think he went on to be the Mayor of Fowey. Here you go Sam. Told you I had already told you this. Only fourteen and a half years ago!
