........as its' coming around to the 30th anniversary of the sad death of John Lennon, I got to thinking (a bit like with JFKs' death in 1963 and that of Elvis in 1977) if anyone recalls where they were when they heard of John Lennons' demise - me personally, on Mon 8th Dec 1980 I was at Wembley Arena for a Queen concert with some Royal Navy oppos (it was part of The Game (Europe) leg) - their first night of three there - I found out about it the next afternoon when back in Torquay after the concert - I was sure I recalled hearing at the time that Freddie opened that second night at Wembley with "Imagine" as a tribute to Lennon....... ........this cracker of a website confirms that - it is also full of loads of other info about previous and future Queen tours at that time - well worth a look by any Queen fans amongst us muzos on here......... www.queenconcerts.com/live/queen/gameeu.html........currently playing......."Empty Garden" - Elton John............(written about what happened that night)........

Mr_W - I have very clear memories of where I was when I heard of Lennon's death. I was living in Sheffield and unemployed. Walking through the city centre on that typically bitter winter's morning I saw the newspaper stand headline "Lennon murdered in New York". I was not a huge fan of his at the time but liked what he stood for and couldn't believe what I was reading. Got the bus back to my flat with tears in my eyes and listened to the radio for the rest of the day still unable to believe what had happened.
I was also one of several posters on this site who was at the Queen concert at the Festival Theatre in 1974 and was interested in the nostalgic link to the Queen Concerts website. I recall Nutz being a pretty good support band too.
Incidentally, currently listening to the imperious Quadrophenia on headphones and about to reach the epic climax that is Love Reign O'er Me

..........currently, on Radio 2 - Manic Street Preachers from Glasto 2007 - "Motorcycle Emptiness" - seen this outfit live in Cardiff - St Davids' Hall - on their home ground - very partisan crowd - Ian Brown (aka King Monkey) was the support act - in addition to being so seriously drunk and incoherent that he could barely perform properly, he was hit by a full pint glass of erm piddle on coming out on stage so things got off to a bad start - degenerated eventually into him offering to take on the front row there - he was removed from stage by roadies eventually, ranting and raving heartily.........ah, another eventful Ian Brown gig........the Manics themselves, fantastic - yep they DID have a mike set up for the still missing Richey Edwards and a highpoint I still remember was James Dean Bradfield (of the many ciggy breaks!!) leaping up onto one of the amp stacks and howling "We're the Manic Street Preachers and we come from the Valleys, this is "A Design for Life!!!!!!" as they launched into this number for an encore (yep, and Nicky Wire was in a dress (again) and a boa)........... ...separate issue - anyone else heard Coldplays' latest effort? - dedicated Christmas single - "Christmas Lights" - imho - a third-rate effort at a sound-u-like "Fairytale Of New York" - 6/10.............bit too shoe-gazy and angst-ridden for me this lot.........
