A horrible result and nothing to show from a game that we should have won by 2 or 3 clear goals (at least) against a really poor Lincoln side who had the one player that was head and shoulders above everyone else, loanee Davide Somma............keystone cop defending and some woeful finishing cost us the game in such a frustrating manner despite some excellent individual performances from us.
All 3 goals were really really soft, in fact they got softer as they went in. After 7 minutes.....several missed tackles allowed Somma all the time in the world to smash the ball past Beavon from close range.
Wroe equalised 20 minutes later as we started to get on top........a crunching tackle by Smith set up Carayol to tease their defence before squaring the ball to Wroe to fire in a slightly defected shot from the edge of the area.
We continued to dominate the 1st half but our front two Rendell and benyon were not on their games and were no real threat. Zebroski was gifted a chance just before half time but skewed his left foot shot horribly wide from 8 yards.......at half time i felt confident we were going to win the game as lincoln were quite dreadful at the back and toothless in midfield........they were their for the taking.
We started the 2nd half reasonably brightly......until we somehow contrived to gift them a second as Somma took the ball past several tackles skillfully but had run out of options on the by line, off balance he cut the ball back but very weakly and the ball rolled past a couple of defenders at about 5mph who failed to clear it and then somehow nutmegged another (Smith?) before eventually falling to a Lincoln player who couldn't miss from 6 yards.
We went straight up the other end and put the pressure on forcing the mother of all goalmouth scrambles.......4 or 5 chances to score went begging the last being Carayol who ballooned the ball over the bar with the goal at his mercy..........
.......30 seconds later we were somehow 3-1 down as from the restart a punt down the middle and Ellis completely unchallenged, slipped over (almost Devon Loch style) allowing Somma to easily round Beavon and walk the ball over the line.
You felt though that we could still get something from the game as Lincoln weren't in anyway secure.........we just had to TAKE our chances that would undoubtebly come.
Buckle made two subs that completely changed the game, Nicholson on for the hapless Ellis to allow Robbo to go to CH and Smith to RB and Macklin on for the completely innefective Benyon to allow Zeb to move from RM to CF with Rendell...........the latter sparked howls of derision and chants of "you dont know what you're doing" aimed at Buckle from the the grandstand serial whingers and football ignoranuses near me.......the impact of the 2 changes was immediate.
We culd have scored 6 in the last 20 minutes but could only take 1............story of this bloody horrible season
.
We battered them with some great stuff........and they wilted but we just don't have a Somma (cool head) in the side, we need to throw some cash, if at all possible, at a new one before the window shuts........end of.
Some remarks on a few of the performances....
Carayol - absolutely magnificent for the whole game, was like a new signing, terrorised their defence time after time with sublime pace, close control and skill..........how he didn't get MOM was a crime.
Smith - defensively he wasn't great but had a good bright, busy performance going forward.
Ellis - mistimed virtually every header, every challenge was woeful positionally and given a lesson by Somma today, add the dreadful mistake for the 3rd goal and his overall performance can be summed up by saying it was in the bracket of Mark Coombe v Exeter 0-4 all those years ago............he was rightly subbed because his head had gone and i hope he can come back from this quickly.......he's a good wholehearted lad, whose done well of late.
Benyon and Rendell - not a front pair that are going to cause teams enough problems, not enough pace and power with either of them in my opinion.
Zebroski - wasted on the wing!!!!!!!
Nicholson - Well...........a stunning cameo
..Itwas like we needed to chase the game and played the joker, instead of a left back who had been frozen out and kicking his heels for months deemed not good enough for Lge 2............we brought on an International, for those 20 minutes,Nicho could easily have been mistaken for Paulo Maldini in his pomp ;D
He was magnificent............i like Buckle, i'm even unashamadely pro Buckle too but please............reinstate him for the rest of the season and sign him up for the next one, in my opinion he's got it badly wrong with this player.........that left foot, those crosses, corners and throws are irreplaceble.
He almost, wonderfully but so agonisingly nearly brought the house down.........when in the 93rd minute he received the ball in space, looked up and swung that exquisite left peg at the ball from 35 yards.....the shot had all the frustration of trips to footballing outposts such as Darlington when he was 3rd choice left back behind it..............it went like a feckin rocket, dipping swerving ( a la Roberto Carlos).......tragically the (by then) inspired linclon keeper Burch, somehow, brilliantly got his palm to it...........Zebroski picked up the loose ball to square to rendell who missed a sitter........game over.
So the gap's down to 6 points...............i knew we weren't going to have a comfortable last month, this bloody Club always stresses me out season after season.......Calm, cool heads are going to be needed for some tough looking fixtuers coming up, a new striker would be nice too....
A game of tremendous positives, shocking negatives but in the cold light of day....
......a really bad result.
